    Hello Canuck
here in Finland we must have two sets of tyres, one for winter and one for rest of the year, if one wants to drive wintertimes. How it is in Canada?

I don't think anyone is required to use winter tires here in Canada but it is a very good idea!

Edit: it is mandatory in Quebec at least. So in some provinces.

Another 15cm of snow due here tomorrow.

Yes, the installation of winter tires is mandatory in Quebec from December 15 to March 15 and studded tires are optionally allowed. In most northern areas, even though not required, the people very sensibly put snow tires on all 4 wheels. Here in Toronto and most of southern Ontario many drivers rely on so-called All Season radials, which are anything but. In reality, you really only need snow tires 3-4 times a winter here in Toronto but as you can see, it's chaos on those days.

    Hello Canuck and Chris
    Thanks for the info!
Here in Finland the installation of winter tires is mandatory from Dec 1 to March 1 and studded winter tyres are allowed from November 1 to March 31 or to the first Monday after Easter, whichever is later, or when the weather demands.

So no more skating on canals, I suppose.
We also had a warm spell, on Monday here temperature rose to +7 deg C, now winter is back, sun is shining and -6 deg C. Last weekend was very warm, at some places, mostly on Åland, the archipelago in SW corner of Finland, temperature rose near +10 deg C but Helsinki kept the warmest temperature measured in Feb in Finland, +11.8 deg C on Feb 28 1943.

We got some more snow last night, not the forecast 10 cm but only 1-2 cm. And clearly a brown hare or hare has paid a visit early in the morning. Photos on Sunday, last night and today. Now - 4 deg C and appr. 30 cm of snow P1010213.JPG P1010214.JPG P1010215.JPG

Wow, we got only 5 cm (2 in) in 6 hours, but still have 34 cm (13.5 in) left, We had appr. 65 cm (25.5 in) a month ago. But 11 inches in five hours is a real blizzard.

No relief here either if it makes you feel any better. Coldest and snowiest winter in 10 years. -9C and sunny here today and the first plus temperatures in a month forecast for next week.

Even the dog is fed up.

I'm not worried, the snow and sub-zero temperatures are the norm here during the winters, at least still is, climate change alarmists and some meteorologists had predicted at least the last 10+ years that snow will become a rarity here in the southern coast of Finland. But at least up to now they have been badly wrong. Some 10-11 years ago the chief specialist of our Meteorological Institute said that in TV and a couple months later we had 80 cm of snow here, of course much more in NE along the eastern border and in Lapland. Then the forecast promised a blizzard of wet snow here and the Minister of Internal Affairs paniced and "ordered" all that could up to roofs to shovel the old snow off the roofs because "there was a risk that extra weight of wet snow might collapse roofs" So up we dutiful citizens went and several also went down with the snow, IIRC two died and in the evening the Minister "forbade" the shovelling of the snow off the roofs of houses and specialists explaned that the roofs of houses were dimensioned to take even that sort of weights, as they were and are. And we as most of Finns have ridge roofs on our houses so gravity takes care of the snow on the roofs sooner or later. The problem is the large shopping malls ans indoor arenas etc and sometimes but rarely part of one of their roofs collapsed under the weight of snow. But Helsinki lays on 60°10′15″N, more or less the same latitude as that of the southern tip of Grönland or the line of the northern borders of Alberta, BC and Manitoba, so we are more worried on the lack of snow and that if it will melt too soon. If the ground is snowless or black as we say here it is very dark and depressing here in mid winter.

Agreed. When the weather experts are unable to accurately predict the weather 2 days from now, I will remain skeptical of their 5-10 year predictions.
