Hi all .I've just discovered this forum and thought I'd ask if anyone had any knowledge on these Handkerchiefs .I picked this up recently and was told it was First World War but have since been told it could be WW2 .anyone have any ideas?? Thanks Ryan
From reading the link its early 1800's A Royal Leicestershire Regiment embroidered panel - Leicester Hindustan, given the Royal Tiger Ba enjoy your research TD I should make clear that I think the regimental badge goes back to the early 1800's - the handkerchief I would guess is late 1800's early 1900's
Thanks for your reply .They became became the royal Leicestershire Regiment in 1946 so I know it's definately from before then.. I know there was a lot of these '"sweetheart" handkerchiefs made during WW1 but was told they could also be WW2 .and have seen a few of a very similar design. So was wondering if anyone could pin point it. I'm with you in thinking early 1900s but wonder if anyone could be sure.
Well - this is a military forum, where guns, tanks, battleships etc etc are eyed with love and affection, not sure we have too may handkerchief specialists. It appears to be made of silk, so again I would estimate it between 1900 and 1930. Might be an idea to take it along to a high quality auction house and ask them, they may know from the materials used and other aspects of its manufacture TD
How about sending a question to the Leicester's Museum to see if they have any ideas: The Museum - Royal Leicestershire Regiment Royal Leicestershire Regiment - Royal Leicestershire Regiment
Haha. I understand that mate but thought someone might have something similar in a collection and could have shed some light on it . Worth a try! And I will try both those suggestions .thanks!
I've edited ''Leicestershire Regiment'' into the thread title to attract the attention of anyone with an interest in that Regiment.
The first thing to notice is that above the Hindoostan scroll there’s a Tudor Crown, or what’s commonly called a King’s Crown - note the Leicestershire Regiment cap badges were actually devoid of a crown. And in the literal sense of recognition, this crown feature would date the piece from 1901 to 1952; although on the succession of Queen Elizabeth there was somewhat of a transition period in the St. Edwards Crown adoption. Again, if we were to strictly adhere to the stitched design, the bottom scroll has ‘Leicestershire’ displayed, only. In 1946, the regiment was granted ‘royal’ status, hence, becoming the Royal Leicestershire Regiment - the new scroll thus read: ‘Royal Leicestershire.’ Frankly, in my opinion, this handkerchief stems from the Great War through to potentially even the Korean War. However, in context it’s a bespoke stitched handkerchief by perhaps a loved one, and with such there can be a degree of artistic interpretation - especially in the colours - or even lack of detail. I think you’d be hard-pressed to accurately date such on this occasion, but either WW1 or WW2 seems most very, very likely, yes. Best, Marcus
Too late to edit the above, but in addition, I suppose you could potentially consider the late Boer War era.
Thanks Marcus. I completely agree .just thought it was quite 'new' looking .Possibly just well looked after!!
