Which came first, the well dressed Nazi, or the American Copper?

That's a 1960 Ford. I always thought the 59 and 60 Fords were the best looking American cars of the era. My aunt had a red 60 convertible.

    That was a joke Chris.
Oh yes, we have them too. The Emergency Task Force (ETF), the tactical unit of the Toronto Police Service, usually shows up after the shootings to intimidate the onlookers and watch the blood congeal.

Back to the (still unconfirmed) link between the State Trooper uniform & the SS.
A few out there saying the Copper's outfit was based on WW1 US officer uniform.

Not a subject I know anything about, but it doesn't seem to quite fit in the same way:

Though there do appear to be some interwar patterns that are closer.
    il_570xN.658322621_g5zx.jpg

Still not fitting the near-identical look, though.

Massive caveat: again, I know nothing of US military uniforms, and the above could only possibly explain the route to the Trooper kit. Not whether it had any bearing whatsoever on Allegemeine SS outfits.

There isn't any standard police uniform in the US. All of the states have their own state police force and most towns have their own as well, plus county police forces and sheriff department.

All the locals have a SWAT team that wears US military uniforms.

The small departments get their clothes from uniform catalogues and the big ones put their contracts out for bid. They can wear anything that the guys in charge select.

The first official police force in the United States was established in the city of New York in 1845. Based on the London police, the New York City Police Department adopted the dark blue uniform in 1853. Other cities – such as Philadelphia, Boston, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Buffalo and Detroit – quickly followed suit by establishing police departments based on the London model, including the adoption of the dark blue, paramilitary-style uniform.

To this day, the majority of police uniforms in. the United States continue to have a paramilitary appearance and are generally of a dark color. Darker colors may have been preferred for their case in cleaning and their ability to help conceal the wearer in tactical situations. Dark colors help cover up stains and keep the officer from being easily spotted by lawbreakers, especially at night. However, why do most police agencies insist on dressing patrol officers in uniforms? Is this simply because of tradition? Is it only for the ease of identification by citizens? Maybe it is because the uniform actually psychologically influences how officers are perceived by the public.

    Adam,
I wonder if the designs were both in the 1930s and tended to follow the styles of the time?

But, then, Massachusetts is about as close as anywhere else here to being National Socialists.:D

  14. We used to have pink Spitfires and pink Landrovers.

Just because one is fighting a war doesn’t mean one should look anything less than absolutely fabulous.

(P.s. From what I can find online, the Spit’s ‘pink’—‘PRU Pink’—might have been rather paler than the ‘Pride’ version that PL965 was painted. Oh well, at least they didn’t make the invasion stripes rainbow.
Clip of the pink Spit on youtube.
Some info on the ‘Pink Panther’ landy.)

That Pink Panther was one of the first kits I ever made. Tamiya. Fascinated me in a way that I think still lingers in a mild camouflage obsession.

I'm sure you've heard 'A Boy Named Sue'...

    Coppers!
We'll never know, will we. Not unless some scrap of 30s German paper emerges saying 'these Massachusetts Police uniforms are verdamt stylish'.

Here's some nitwits of the German-American Bund rallying in Madison Square Garden in NYC in 39.
The NY city cop is wearing the classic double breasted high collar uniform that they wore until the late sixties

He had a better outcome than many of the SS.
In 1974, Hanfstaengl attended his 65th Harvard reunion, where he regaled the Harvard Band about the authors of various Harvard fight songs.

The Massachusetts State Police had some officers who admired the more stylish, two-tone-blue attire of the French Army, originated during Napoleon's rule. So in the 1930s, Massachusetts troopers donned "French and electric blue" uniforms." Before that they wore forest green Army surplus outfits, with leather or canvas puttees, white shirts, and red ties. Since Hanfstaengl returned to Germany in 1922, its hard to say which version he was familiar with.

I thought Hugo Boss was the SS uniform designer.

I think 'nitwits' is about right for Kuhn's boys.
Quite like the old-fashioned NY Police uniform. Proper. Though I also think our Coppers in baseball caps & convenient modern gear look wrong. Bring back the proper helmets... & capes.

I thought Boss being the designer was a bit of a myth.
Certainly made in his factories, and he was one of Adolf's fellow-travellers, but not confirmed as connected to design.
