For the mention in despatches it's usually difficult to discover the circumstances. If the family has Arthur's campaign medals there should be a bronze oak leaf attached to the war medal to recognise the MiD. He might have received a certificate as well.

I am in touch with the son of Maj Gabbett who was OC 225 Fd Coy RE at Cassino. I will send him that 1983 reunion photo to see if his father is in the picture.

    Regards

Frank, I believe the 225 reunion was usually ORs only but please do show it to Maj Gabbett's son.

    Lee.

Are you planning to be in Cassino for the 75th Anniversary of the opening of the Amazon crossing?

We are holding a 0530 ceremony on 13 May 19 on the riverbank at the crossing point as part of a battlefield study that I am running. 75 years to the minute that the bridge opened for business and tanks from 17/21L crossed to support 10 and 28 Inf Bdes on the other side.

    Regards

    Frank

Hello, I’m looking for information about my Grandad . I’ve just received some of his army docs which has revealed he served with 225 Field Company, RE. He enlisted in 1935 and left in November 1945
He was Sapper F E Bottomley - 1870390. He passed away in 1977 long before I had the chance to know him. Much appreciated for your help with any info/photos. I guess I will have a long way to go with the research!
