A few words in praise of the Liddell Hart Centre for Military Archives. I recently applied for a large archive of photocopied material from the Liddell Hart Centre, King's College London and was very impressed by the help provided by the friendly and knowledgeable staff who pulled out all the stops to provide the material almost by return post. Tom. (Mods) I don't think this link is presently included in the very useful list on this site.
I wrote them back in Oct to see how to access this Catalog: Liddell Hart 1/1-780; Liddell 1/658 1933 - 1935 Lt Col A E Stokes-Roberts sad to say I only got an acknowledgment that my request was forwarded to the Archivist. Perhaps you can advise further how or who to contact?

Perhaps you can advise further how or who to contact? Hi Jerome, My experience was certainly very different to yours. While doing some on-line research I came accross a reference to CHATER 6/1 held in the Liddell Hart archive at Kings College London. I phoned King's College (Tel +44 (0)20 7836 5454) and was put through to the Liddell Hart Centre where I was able to speak directly to a very helpful archivist. I explained my interest and enquired how to access the material. I was almost immediately emailed an application form and copyright agreement which I printed out, filled in and signed, scanned and emailed straight back. Next day I received an email saying they had located the file and was given a quote for photocopying and postal costs. I then contacted them by phone and paid by debit card. Within a week a large envelope dropped through my letter-box. A superb service. Hope this helps, Tom. (CHATER: 6/1 1943 May-1945 Nov Papers relating to Chater's association with the Middle East Combined Training Centre, Kabrit, Sudan, including typescript correspondence between Chater and Brig Bernard E Ferguson, Combined Operations Headquarters, requesting Chater's recollections of the Combined Training Centre, Nov 1945; typescript notes by Chater on the Middle East Combined Training Centre, during the period Mar-Jul 1943, and typescript training instructions and exercises from the Middle East Combined Training Centre. 1 file.)
Years ago in the mid 90's I wanted to go to look at two documents (at least) - one from the Great War...they had the original war diary form my Grandfathers unit and it wasn't at the NA.....and the Warrack papers (ADMS 1st Airborne Division at Arnhem) and I got a reply saying I needed to provide references from the professor supervising my thesis or my agent/publisher if writing a book! Fortunately about a year later I mananged to get a letter form a director of a military museum and they let me in....so perhaps they've changed in the period since my attmept.....

Hi, There is still a 'References' section on the application form but I was advised to ignore it as it was no longer a requirement. Tom.
Forgive me for sounding cynical. Perhaps these days money talks and if money can be obtained for the Archive service, this must help amateur historians and not purely the professionals. From what Tom said the service now is good. Regards Tom
Require a little feedback please on Liddell Hart Centre for Military Archives. I have in my possession some very important and totally unique documents that I and the owner have decided need to be deposited somewhere that they will be properly looked after and with reasonably easy access to. We are thinking of presenting the papers to the above Archive. Your thoughts and guidance please. Lionboxer
Hi All There's a file I desperately need copying at King's College London. Is anyone able to visit and copy this file for me? I'm happy to pay a reasonable rate or alternatively copy some files at the National Archives in London to a similar/larger size for free in return. Cheers Andy
Steven you are a top bloke of the highest order, feel free to collar me for breakfast, lunch and dinner at the National Archives unless you want paying?
The AIM25 Liddell Hart Centre list linked above does not offer digitised text of any LHC documents: it is simply a text catalogue of items held. AIM25 (Archives in London and the M25 area) is an educational charity supporting the development of and public access to historical archives held in the London area. The Liddell Hart Centre for Military Archives, King's College London, controls access to its archives holdings pretty tightly, especially for personal papers, varying from "Open, subject to signature of reader's undertaking form." to: "Open, subject to signature of Reader's undertaking form, and appropriate provision of a letter of introduction." Further, copies, subject to the condition of the original, may be supplied for research use only. Requests to publish original material should be submitted to the Trustees of the Liddell Hart Centre for Military Archives, attention of the Director of Archive Services. While the AIM25 effort at collective archive indexing is welcome, in this case you'd be just as well off checking the King's College site Archives | Libraries & Collections | King’s College London and Catalogue King's Collections : Archive Catalogues : Home
