It's free at your local library, but you may be limited as to how long you can stay on.(2 hours max) At my local library they told me you can stay on longer, if no-one else has booked the computers. Graham.
The Findmypast subscription has also changed ,you could pay for a month at a time but now its a three month minimum billed at £44.85, They also changed the way you can view past records, you could even without a subscription revisit records which you had previously paid to view but now unless your subscription is current these records are locked. Newspapers as well. If you have records you want to read or refer too regularly download them to your PC or an external hard drive Select Subscription | findmypast.co.uk Kyle
In May last year (2017) I applied for one of three new posts at the TNA. WW1 Medical record compilers basically. I was not considered for the post, no degree to wave around unfortunately and wonder if these records are the culmination of the successful candidates work. Seems likely.
Maybe - but then your work on Chindits is far superior to scanning some dusty books in the right sequence, and dont forget you also need to wave a degree around for at job at a mackydougalls these days TD
Thanks for those kind words TD. I was just trying to get myself working indoors for a few years, after 35ish out in all weathers.
One of the benefits of being retired now!!! Even if I am waiting for my 7th operation in 2 years since my bowel ruptured.
It makes it worse with Ancestry when they put things you want into Fold 3 which is another subscription the robbing gets.
and what is doubly worse is that Fold3 is a company owned by Ancestry - so you end up paying those robeing bug ars twice. Ancestry's customer service personnel tried telling me that Fold3 was a totally seperate company - nothing to do with Ancestry - as you can tell I am still not a happy bunny with them, as this happened about 12 months ago Greed is what its all about I'm afraid TD
Plus all those that fall out after a buy and try, because they find its not as easy to research their family as their tacky adverts suggest. I won't even go into the DNA promotion. I discontinued my subscription because I had exhausted all of the records of interest. They both have practically nothing worth looking at earlier than 1700, which is where my interests lie, as cataloguing such records would be very time consuming and expensive.
I'm going to "UNI" Two-year degree plan to cut cost of tuition fees Two-year degree plan to cut cost of fees Yet more dumbing down of the system to encourage youngsters who are not of that ilk to waste time and effort when they should just leave school and get a job. And the ones that come out from the Polytechnics/Technical Colleges (UNI) end up doing the same job as they would if they just left school without the debt and no chance of getting a job of their dreams. regards Clive MA .BA,MC,STD,VD
What you gonna study Clive. Photography? Monumental architecture? In all seriousness, I have to agree with your sentiments and I see it everyday at work.
Sorry hijacked the thread But if you require people to work on archive stuff they really need the interest which just comes with what you are interested in. The Welsh have a name for it Hiraeth amongst other meanings it equates to nostalgia. Ours is nostalgia but in a more direct and real manner. regards Clive
