Thank you for accepting me to the WW2 talk , I'm totally new to all this but was given advice on joining by a friend of mine , I'm based in north wales and have been trying to research into my fathers involment during the Second World War , as my late father never wanted to talk to me about his involvement I've been trying to do some research myself for sometime to be honest with not much luck , I don't have a lot in hand but have my fathers army book , a few photos and a few badges , I've attached a photo of his army book , or part of it , as you can see he was discharged in 1945 , I know very little else I don't know if anyone can help me
    Thanks

    Hi
Once you get those, post them up on the thread. Most people need some help in deciphering the info.
Hopefully you'll get some idea with which unit(s) he served. With that you can discover even more.

    Good luck.

    Wow That's brilliant
I'm in the process of finding out if my late father was entitled to any medals as I would very much doubt he would have gone to receive any as I think he just wanted to forget about the war , does anyone know what medals he could receive if he was entitled to any ?

    Minimum would probably be

    Defence Medal
    [IMG]

and War Medal 1939 to 1945

Details of medals and contact info for the Medal Office are all on - Medals: campaigns, descriptions and eligibility

You weren't issued them after WW2 you applied for them, they would then be sent in the post and you had to have the medals ribboned, at the time shops like Boots (I think) offered this service for free and also engraved the medals with Name/Rank/Number/Regt [they arrived blank] applied for my fathers in 2001 and they arrived in 2 months - but this was their first issue.

Service records will tell you what he was entitled to

That's interesting and I never knew you had to apply for them .. Was just googling to see how the medals where handed out, but didn't find any info , I very much doubt my father would have applied for them ..looking at the link I think there's could be the France , Germany and Holland medal as he served NW Europe from December 1944 to May 1945 ..thank you for the info

If thats the case - wait for his service records - he would probably not receive the defence medal as shown above

No more speculation from me - I know its difficult but like Xmas lets wait

So on his service records do they say what medals he was entitled too or is that something you've got to work out yourself ?

It should be on his records.
If not, you could always ring MOD Medal office to see if they would check to what he was entitled. See TD's link for contact.

If the Medal Office should confirm that he never applied for them, next of kin are entitled to apply for a deceased veteran's unissued medals. (They do not issue replacement medals if they have been lost over time.)

Apply for a veterans badge or a medal

If you’re applying for someone else’s medal
You can apply on behalf of a veteran if you have lasting power of attorney.

If the veteran has died, you must be the official next of kin. The general rules for the official next of kin are:
    • the person’s spouse or civil partner has the first claim to the medal, and then the eldest child
    • if there’s no spouse or child, the parent is entitled to apply
    • if there’s no spouse, child or parent, the eldest grandchild is entitled to apply

I'm thinking the Paris photo would have been in 1945 , until I receive his army records which I've applied for I'm not sure what went on , what did the Royal Artillerey do in NW Europe from Dec 1944 to May 1945 ? Would anybody know ? I know something happened in France which lead to his discharge ..
