I found this for my grandfather on a ancestry site, and wondered what the units were, "T" Depot etc I can't seem to find anything on them, I know from 1929 - 1950 he was living in Arlesey Bedfordshire so some point he was at RAF Henlow. Hope someone can help? Best regards Liam
Hi, I see you’ve followed my advice on GWF and posted here. You might attract more interest if you include his name and RAF in your title. Steve EDIT TO ADD OP POSTED THIS TEXT AND IMAGE ON GWF OVER THE WEEKEND “Hi could someone tell me what these raf units are, in the 1920s I'm trying to map where my Great Grandfather was at this particular time. Many thanks. He was living in Bedfordshire from 1929 to 1950, so he was at some point at RAF Henlow, in 1943, he was AC2 at RCAF Penhold, Alberta, Canada in 1943. Many thanks Liam

Thanks for PM. Click on edit button at the bottom right of your post then click on “more options” and when your post opens in edit mode you should be able to edit the topic title. If I’m wide of the mark someone else will help - perhaps a kind hearted moderator will intervene. Steve
Seems you only get a certain length of time to edit. Should I copy what you wrote and start a new thread and delete this one?
New members sometimes do not have the facility to edit, it may take 5 or so posts before they can, so suggest you contact Admin - dont delete this thread. Do you have his full service records , what I have seen seems 'light' on detail considering the time he spent in the RAF Link - Request records of deceased service personnel TD
Hi TD, I currently only have 2 pages which I've obtained from FMP, I haven't yet ordered his full service records, should I do that first? Liam
Richard, There was an RAF topic on the forum last week when a member posted 2 pages he’d obtained from RAF which covered a relatives non flying service 1940/46. The RAF experts said that was all RAF maintained on a non flying man’s discharge so it might be best for Liam to wait for the advice of an RAF expert. My own thought is that the pre 1939 enlistment RAF material on FMP is all that there will be even for a non flying man who served into WW2 period - but I’m no expert. We’ve been spoiled by seeing multi page Army service files which can be like novels in length and detail compared to very brief RAF & Navy “service papers” posted on the forum. Regards Steve EDIT TO ADD - HERE IS THE TOPIC FROM LAST WEEK http://ww2talk.com/index.php?threads/lack-of-info-on-raf-servicemans-record.74856/unread
"T" Depot was at Uxbridge as was "M" Depot. TE Lawrence was there at the same time. "FAD" could be Forward Ammunition Depot. Regards, Dave
I don't know if its of much use, but the following thesis has a lot about RAF logistics for some of that period: "Royal Air Force Logistics During the Second World War: Transformation, Sustainment and Flexibility" Submitted by Trevor Stone https://core.ac.uk/download/pdf/77031398.pdf But on Page 217 he says the following, which if correct, means that the FAD entry dated 1926 might be something different or was the term used then resurrected in 42? "Consequently, the Air Ministry introduced what was known as the Forward Ammunition Depot Scheme in late 1941/early 1942. As part of this, all the existing AAPs became Forward Ammunition Depots (FAD)"
I don't think it's an 'F' - see how the writer writes F in column to left and two columns to right of the entry. Looks more like an 'H'. Tim
