A framed board including medals and photos has been found a worker in a skip at a council waste unit in the North east.

An appeal for family has been launched via media and someone has come forward claiming to be family, but the bloke who found the board isn't quite sure how to go about matching "his" Arthur Grew with the Arthur Grew who claims to be his family.

The only info he has is his name and regiment number-Arthur Grew 6850797
The family member has only provided a brief family history which doesn't include a DOB, but does include his wife and children's names.

Can anyone suggest how best to try and match the two up?

I'll try and post the photo of the board.

Can they provide you with a photograph of Arthur that matches?

Some information from the board... His service number is from The King's Royal Rifle Corps block of numbers 6837001 - 6905000 and the black cross on red patch is also the hat badge for the KRRC. There is also a North Africa Star, so Arthur served there with the 8th Army. It does not look like he went on to serve in Italy with the 1st Battalion nor NW Europe with the 2nd Battalion, as there is no applicable star. There is also a RASC shoulder flash, suggesting he saw service also with the Royal Army Service Corps.

    Hi,

I saw the item on BBC North East local evening news last week. The medals were found by a member of staff at a council tip in North Shields. The news item also showed the old style single page military service record (copy in below article) produced by MOD before adoption of current system that was found with the medals so all military information is already discovered. The supposition in the news item was that the items had originated in a house clearance in Hexham, Northumberland after the death of Arthur Glew.

It might save duplication of effort if the OP posted a link to the source of the “family” information.

World War II hero's medals were dumped in a skip - can you help find his family?

    Steve

EDIT TO ADD LINK TO BBC NEWS ARTICLE

World War Two medals found in skip

NB CONTAINS BETTER QUALITY IMAGE THAN IN OP POST.

OK so that makes it interesting

The article (in Tullybrones post) plus Gus's details talk of Arthur Glew - this thread title is Arthur Grew - which one is it

    Hi,

IMHO no point members posting additional military information as it is all known via the MOD record found with the medals.

IMHO It is a straight forward family history - rather than military history - query but the current difficulty is that OP needs to post details of the supposed family connection (names) to Arthur Glew so meaningful research/advice can be done/provided.

    Well spotted TD.

As the image in the linked news article of the military history sheet from MOD has him as Glew I’d take that over a journalists Grew?

I’m not on Facebook but here is a link to the page on the Council Tip staff member who has originated the family search (taken from link in BBC news article above).

Hopefully may have some helpful information.

I didn't appreciate that a military record was found with them. I had only seen the blokes facebook post shared in a Weardale facebook group I'm a member of. As I said, I've just been communicating with him via fb messenger, but his messages aren't very easy to understand and very brief. Apologies if I've caused any confusion and overworked anyone. As you've read the articles, maybe you can expand on why they think it's come from a house clearance in Hexham? North Shields is in a different county from Hexham, unless it was a house clearance firm from North Shields. Somehow I don;t think such a firm, especially from North Shields, would be throwing it in a skip, unless of course the medals have no value.

    Hi,

TEXT FROM CHRONICLE ARTICLE IN LINK POSTED ABOVE -

“The skip the medals were found in came from a derelict building in Hexham, so Chris, 31, from Newcastle, speculated that his family may come from this area - and he's eager to get the collection back to them.”

I’m not 100% sure but I think BBC Look North item may have introduced the “house clearance” into my subconscious.

Typical poor journalism to see DM online journalist/headline writer doesn’t know the difference between KRRC and Royal Fusiliers!

However they do mention the Hexham house clearance queried above :salut:
