At the end of the war my dad was given an address book with all the names of those that served with 164 Battery 59th HAA regiment (at least those that survived).

    Battery164AddressBook.jpg

As this book is getting rather fragile I decided to copy most of the details into a .CSV file, which means it should be possible to open and search using any computer with any spreadsheet application (Gnumeric, LibreOffice, Excel & so on). Unfortunately this forum does not accept .CSV files, so I've had to rename it as a .txt file. So if you do download it, please rename with a .csv extension.

I haven't bothered to include full addresses, just the town or county where the solder was in 1946.

I'm not sure if this information is really of any use to anyone, but maybe if they think a relative served in the 59th HAA this may help determine if they were in 164 Battery. ...it is, what it is.

Hi Stefan, I'm sorry you are having problems with my file.
What operating system are you using? (e.g. Windows, Linux, Mac, & so on)

Hi Stefan, I've just tried opening the file on a Windows 7 machine and it seems OK.

But unfortunately, when viewing files in the file manager, most versions of Windows hide the file extentions for any file types it recognises. So if you only see the file listed as:-

    59_EssexRegt_HAA_Bty_164_AddressBook

...you may need to follow this procedure:-

    - In File Manager, press the 'Alt' key once to display the File Manager menu options (i.e. File Edit View Tools Help) if they are not already visible.
    - Select Tools then select Folder Options... then select the View tab.
    - Find the "Hide extensions for all know file types" and de-select it (i.e. by clicking on it to remove the tick mark).

Now when you go back to view the file in File Manager you should be able to see the file name with extension:-

    59_EssexRegt_HAA_Bty_164_AddressBook.txt

    - Now right mouse click on this file and select the 'Rename' option.
    - Carefully use the right-arrow key to move the cursor to the end of the file name, and use the backspace key to remove 'txt'.
    - Now type in 'csv' (but without the quotes).
    - Press 'enter' key then select 'YES' from the message that pops up.

Now this file should open in Excel.

I hope this helps, but if this isn't your problem, what happens when you try to open this file?

Note: if you just try to open this file in Windows without changing the file extension, it will load the file in a text editor (probably NotePad) and you will see the contents on one long single line.

Note to Moderators: could you add a few more file extension options to the file upload system. Comma Separated Values file extension .csv would be useful, as would .mp3
