Sure, if the mods dont mind. And the Germans were nowhere near ready. Hitler was sightseeing in France because he had no desire or idea how to invade England. Sealion was a propaganda exercise. Hitler thought Britain would settle for peace.

I get what your saying about what ifs. But if there are enough facts and realistic opinions one can make a pretty accurate educated guess to the result. How else do we learn about history after all.

    Generally speaking:

There's a greyish area where a what-if scenario, forming part of a wider discussion, is ok - so long as the exchanges stay on topic.

What-if's 'for their own sake' are not welcome on this forum.

What we do know is that the Luftwaffe were over confident after their continental victories. They underestimated the strength and determination of the RAF not to be driven from the skies above Britain. The RAF's strength,Dowding's control and organisation of British air defence in the end proved to be superior to the Luftwaffe's air offensive capability.

The Germans were lacking in the intelligence of the Chain Home radar early warning system although prewar they had patrolled the North Sea by airship to detect any transmissions......they found no evidence so it has to be assumed that their detection equipment was incapable of monitoring any new form of incoming aircraft detection.

The air battle took a different course when night bombing by both sides became the norm.

Preparations for Sealion were a task too far for Hitler and the work he had undertaken for an invasion was quickly undone by the RAF's assaults on his invasion port facilities in the Battle of the Barges....the sea transport system was hurriedly put together from any equipment to hand and not from a well planned operation.

Having not been able to get Britain to submit,I think Hitler's ideology won him over eventually and he became more interested in extending his Greater German Reich. The adding of Russian territory up the the Urals became his utmost motivation.

He must have been disappointed with Ribbentrop, the self appointed expert on the British who advised Hitler that Britain would not be drawn into a new war with Germany. For his part Hitler envisaged that Britain would accept his offer that he would never interfere with the British Empire so long as the British would allow him free hand in Europe.

No offence, but only a civilian would make a statement like that. Firsty, the reason the Poles and French lost the airwar is because they had woefully inferior aircraft. They flew in suicidal formations and followed tactics from ww1. Did you ever stop to think how once the Luftwaffe came up against the RAF things didnt go so well for Germany? I cant even be bothered to write a reply to such nonsense. Just answer me this? How many ships did the Luftwaffe sink in the channel, during and after Dunkirk/The fall of France? And how did Russia sweep the Germans from the skies from 1942 onwards? The blitzkrieg was a good idea right up until every other country worked it out, copied it, and then used it against them to wipe them out. I think someone needs an education.....

Because he knew a sea invasion could lead to disaster. After all, the was quoted as saying "im a hero on land and a coward on water" The Kriegsmarine didnt want the job, the army didnt want the job and the luftwaffe certainly didnt want the job. What did Hitler do after the defeat of France? He went on a shopping and sightseeing holiday lol That says it all.....

Wow, in all my years studying/researching history & especially ww2 history (Airwar) I have seen and read many crass statements almost exclusively by American citizens. But your opening comment about being best placed to give a credible opinion on sealion/invasion of Britain, yours has to be one of the most ignorant and uneducated. It would be like me saying as an Englishman im more qualified to give an opinion on Vietnam. Just because your impartial doesnt mean you know what your talking about. And clearly you dont!..... Sealion was nothing more than a bluff. And if you think im wrong, compare it to D-day? And the sheer weight of men and materials needed to make a cross channel invasion. Germany had nowhere near those kind of resources. Hitler didnt want war with Britain. And after the fall of France he was sure England would sue for peace. Otherwise, why commit all his efforts to the east? He knew defeating Britain (If indeed that ever could have been achieved. It would have just handed more power more quickly to the states. Your argument is flawed in so many ways i dont even have time to correct it all......

see NE Diary 1939-45; Background Information - Sections 23 to 26

"[25] .. INVASION PLANS FOR No 1 REGION"

Will give you an idea as to what preparation the British had/would carry out which would cause the Germans a high cost of an invasion of Great Britain.

This is just the plan for one Region, it would be fair to say that the other regions would take likewise measures.

    Hi,

Most of the discussion had been about the general overview of the invasion of Great Britain so I posted the link ref the NE Diary 1939-45; Background Information - Sections 23 to 26

"[25] .. INVASION PLANS FOR No 1 REGION"

To give a detailed part of the plan showing what was expected of the servicemen and civilians should the day come.

These quotes put a shiver down my Spine

"The Newcastle bridges would be mined but not immediately blown - they were to be defended to the last man"

"in addition tugboats stood by ready to ram seaplanes as they landed."

Quotes like these certainly showed the spirit of the people who`s land was being invaded.

This is part of the reason why these 'what if' threads never work, someones views are always right and someones elses are always wrong but because it never bloody happened how would we know.

Its like saying what would have happened if certain people were never born - Hitler, Churchill, Marie Curie, David Beckham - o_O
They were born and life happened - live with it

So when America is disarmed and all your rights are taken away, is that your answer? To just live with it....
Man, are you in for a rude awakening! Its attitudes and thinking like that, that has got us all in the mess we are in today. But for people like you i guess ignorance really is bliss huh.....

Oh and fyi, nothing about ww1/ww2 & Vietnam happened by chance. Jeez your eyes really are wide shut. And im not hating, just saying. If we as a civilised and moral society are to evolve and prosper, we must take action now before its too late. I'll admit one thing American leaders have done well. Brainwashing their own people to the point where they believe anything that happens. And blindly do what they are told without question. How sad mankind has become. How very sad....

One person, whose post you quoted and replied to, hasn't been on the forum since 2009.
Another made a comment specifically about What-Ifs and you go off on some weird tangent.

Unlikely as they are to rise to your personal insults, I still suggest you refrain from petty name-calling here. You've been a registered member for over a year so you should know it's not our thing.
