Ron, Here is a link, which you probably know about already, which mentions a recently printed history in the sources section. A search on Archive.org revealed nothing. Sorry... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/78th_Infantry_Division_(United_Kingdom)
Ron, are you thinking about this booklet (though the online version is a work in progress): 78th Division Final Offensive In Northern Italy
In earlier posts in this topic, there are references to book files from the Digital Library of India. This website ceased operating about a year ago, but prior to that, a proportion of its book files were uploaded to the Internet Archive, archive.org. including all the Indian Army Lists. There are references in earlier posts to Forum members possessing, or creating, digital book files. Those Forum members, please give consideration to uploading those files to the Internet Archive, in the Community Texts category, so that the files are available to all. This is not a difficult process. As part of the process, you need to register (if not already registered), but can use any user name you choose, but you do need to have a “good” internet speed for the upload to take place. I believe the standard upload is in the form of a pdf, but “Most typical formats are acceptable”. This internet Archive page “Community Texts” has a section “Click here to contribute your book!” Community Texts : Free Books : Free Texts : Free Download, Borrow and Streaming : Internet Archive As part of this process you will need to add, or amend auto fill-in details, such as book title, author, year of publication, and there is an optional section for comments, and other optional sections such as licence. There is an earlier post in this topic, requesting the file from the Digital Library of India for Official History of Operations on the N.-W. Frontier of India, 1920-35 by General Staff Army Headquarters, India 1945. This publication unfortunately was not previously uploaded to the Internet Archive from the DLI. It would be great if anyone has this, or another digital file, if they could upload it to the Internet Archive, so it is available to all. Cheers Maureen
Funnily enough, I found the new DLI the other night. Gave up after about an hour as the search and presentation of results is maddening. Assuming it's the same organisation (still not sure) I haven't been able to find things I know were there! National Digital Library of India
I think they got in trouble for infringing copyright. My speculation is that they simply purged by publication date.
Although I am hopeful that the previous content from the Digital Library of India will be transferred to the National Digital Library of India, I do not think there is any there currently. I would be interested if anyone finds anything which might be from the old DLI. When the NDLI was first introduced, there was something saying the DLI would be a contributor, but that statement was soon removed. I agree the Search on the NDLI is not user friendly. Cheers Maureen
Ffolkes, I haven't forgotten anyone here, Tom Cundiff and I are both very busy, but he's also down and out pro tem due to a major shoulder operation (they practically rebuilt the whole thing). He's still recovering, but is on the mend and as soon as he's feeling appreciably better, he w/get back to converting the 20th Ind Div History into a pdf document. Thanks for your patience, Andrew
At time of writing, there is a free online book on fold3, a part of Ancestry, a reprint edition of The Fighting Cock, being the History of the 23rd Indian Division 1942-1947 by A J F Doulton Page 1 Military Books - Fold3 Probably not part of the above series, as there appears to be 252 pages. I have a feeling the free availability may be a temporary availability only. From a section Military Books Fold3 Browse There are other books such a History of the Guides 1922-1947 Cheers Maureen
Thank you Maureen. Many titles there with grabbing from my point of view, especially in relation to the Indian Mutiny.
Have now seen elsewhere that Ancestry military records are free until 9 August 2018, so probably the same date applies for Fold3 Regarding the Indian Mutiny, many free online books on the FIBIS Fibiwiki page Indian Mutiny Indian Mutiny - FIBIwiki Cheers Maureen
Regarding the Indian Mutiny, many free online books on the FIBIS Fibiwiki page Indian Mutiny Indian Mutiny - FIBIwiki Cheers Maureen[/QUOTE] Another plunder session for me on the horizon, thanks Maureen. Steve
There is an icon, with crossed hammer, top right hand corner of the book reader, which has a download option. However I think this is probably a download for just one page, although I haven't done this, so I think you would separately need to download each page. Cheers Maureen
Scratch that, I found out how to do it, tedious, but also worth it! Thanks for the Heads up, Maureene...Appreciated!
Ffolkes, I've downloaded The Fighting Cocks as indiv .pdf files. If someone here knows how to gather them and create one entire book from them, please let me know so I can 1) Attempt to do it for all 2) So you can do it for all of us. Otherwise, I will be forwarding the book on to Tom Cundiff who is finally almost recovered from his major shoulder surgery and should be able to make a complete document for us all in the near future.
