Hi I am looking for details of Robert William Cook 4470622 DLI 10th bn. I have his death date and his grave details etc but more information would be good if anyone can help me.
To help others out I've added 10 DLI to the thread title & will add a link to CWGC to save them looking him up. Casualty
Claire, welcome, the advice is always to get a copy of service records that will give you his military history: Get a copy of military service records
Battalion war diary transcribed here. 10th Battalion, The Durham Light Infantry, War Diary June 1944 - 70 Brigade I see they suffered 1 casualty the night of 26th/27th. I wonder if that was Pte Cook .
Photo of his headstone here if you haven't already found it. Cook Robert William Pte 4470622 - 70 Brigade

Hi Claire , i work as a researcher at the DLI Archive and am currently doing a project on the DLI fallen in Normandy , i do have a photo of your Uncle Robert plus ones of his grave , he was killed between Fontenay and Rauray during Operation Martlet which began on 25th June . Unfortunately 10 DLI is one of the Bn's that we have the least information on as they were disbanded in mid august 1944 . If you have any further info about him i would very much appreciate hearing from you , Regards Paul
Are you aware of this page on the Fallen Heroes of Normandy website ? Fallen Heroes of Normandy | Detail
Thank you so much for the information. We don’t know where or how he died so this was lovely to read. I visit this page regularly and this is the only photo we have of uncle Robert. If I find anything else out I will be sure to let you know. Thanks again
You can find his Memorial Page on the 70th Brigade Website here:- Cook Robert William Pte 4470622 - 70 Brigade Do please contact me at 70brigade@newmp.org.uk if you can add more details than I already have - photos and family information especially. Do you have his service record? Regards John L Dixon
Claire, it obviously depends upon precisely what you wish to find out, but I would suggest that you seriously consider getting hold of his service records as suggested by Tricky and also when you originally posted your request. If your particular interest is the circumstances surrounding his death then you may have enough to go on, but his records will give the picture of his whole service. He certainly enlisted with the DLI, but did he always serve with the 10th, perhaps he did, but are you certain?
Thanks for this additional information which has now been incorporated on Robert's Memorial Page on the 70th Brigade Website.
