In Fordham Essex we lost 4 men in WW2. Each of them have such different stories to their circumstances of death.
We commemorate the death of John Arthur Treby on the 1st June 1944, he was 19 and a flight engineer with the R.A.F. Volunteer Reserve. John was born and baptised in Fordham and lived there with his parents. I was interested that he was buried in Scotland, so I investigated these circumstances.
It came to light that he was one of 8 men who died on a training exercise from Lincoln having found 7 other deaths for that date using the CWGC website.

'On 31 May 1944, a Halifax LL414 aircraft, from the1667 Heavy Conversional Unit Squadron, based at Sandtoft, in Lincolnshire, took flight for a night cross country exercise. It failed to return and it is thought that it crashed in the early hours of 1 June because of bad weather and engine failure; it went down in the Glen Isla area. Onboard the aircraft were eight airmen, six of whom were with the Royal Canadian Air Force. There were no survivors.'

The eight airmen who perished in this accident were:-
RCAF Pilot Officer Leslie Llewellyn Williams
    RCAF Flying Officer William Campbell
RCAF Flight Sergeant obert Trevor Dean
RCAF Warrant Officer James Stewart MacDonald
    RCAF Thomas Goldie
    RCAF Sergeant Vernon Thomas Shervan
    RAFVR William Sidney Doughty
    RAFVR John Arthur Treby

Thank you Dave, your attachments much appreciated. Bad enough losing one's life in war, but on a training session. Just shows how dangerous it could get for the airmen.
