Bearable is the friendships and Red Cross Parcels. The rest of what they endured was sheer misery- lice, random shooting and beatings, malnutrition, filthy conditions, rats, severe hunger, back breaking labour, boredom, suicides, people going insane etc.
Barbara, all true. I can only comment on the OFLAG VB. I am sure there were many other camps with much worse condiditions. And a prison camp is a prison camp, no matter what individuals were trying to make it bearable. Stefan.
Hi Barbara, very true, however I have reports from a Stalag in Austria were the guys worked in the vinyards and such, had healthy food and were looked after by a very friendly farmers family. The farm is still there today. Stefan.
Hi Stefan, I’ve read that Farm work was a welcome change from being in the camp and often the best chance of better food- depending on the farmer. But overall, Stalags were not good places to be
Hi Barbara, I am 100% in agreement. To me STALAG should rally be translated to Straflager which in English would be Punishment Camp.
