I'm new to the forum & just posting to say hello. My father fought during WW2 & spoke very little about what he did during that time, for years the only stories he told me was from when he was waiting to be demobbed. I have always been interested in where he was posted during the conflict but until his later years he took most of it to his grave, just giving me snippets of information. I am now trying to find out more (if I can) about him during this time. Kevin
Hi Kevin Welcome The only place to really start finding out about your fathers military time is to apply for his service records and these can ONLY be obtained from the MOD - link - Request records of deceased service personnel - GOV.UK TD
Hi Tricky - I have looked at the MOD site & they need a service number. Unfortunately Dad would never tell me it, so I don't know where to start. All I have is an old photo taken in Basra (1942 I believe, Dad is in the centre with his brother on the right & their cousin on the left) & his medals e.g. Star of Africa & Star of Italy. I'm going to my Mums' this week & hope to search the loft with the hope of turning up anything that relates to this time
If you fill in the forms (will need a death cert I believe) do so in your Mums name as she is regarded as next of kin and therefore you wont need to send a cheque - it will be free TD
Thanks Clive, I'll give that a shot then. It was just when I was looking at the forms I thought I saw that the service number was needed Kevin
Basra looks a lot different from when I was there. His cap badge looks like Royal Engineers. Definitely get the service records whilst they are free. Good luck Andy
Thanks Andy I know his brother was in the Royal Engineers but he never would tell me what Regiment he was in. Amongst his medals were two RE badges (maybe for lapels)? I assumed they belonged to his brother as when he passed away Dad got a few few trinkets including that photo. Kevin
