    Hi there,

For a few years now I have been trying to find out information about my Grandad Ernest Millward during WWII or his platoon, the 40 R.M Commando Mortar Platoon. I would be very grateful if anyone has any info.

I've attached a picture of his platoon (he is in the middle row third from the right).

I'm afraid I've hit a brick wall otherwise in finding anything else about his time during the war.

    Many thanks,

    Stu Millward

    Hi Drew,

This is the problem I'm afraid I don;t know. When I was a child he had dementia and then he died when I was a teen so I never could ask him.

    Hi there,

I did think about that but do you need a service number as I was under the impression that you did? I freely admit that I could be wrong.

Just a date of birth or service number to apply. Both is better but one will do it.

Stuart, the more information that you can provide the better the chance of success. When and where was he born, when and where did he die? Did he have a middle name? Even some rough idea might give us a chance of locating him so that you can get his birth/death details to enable you to apply for his records.

Is he the ex commando Ernest B Millward, born 1922, who played golf, was amateur champion and was in the British Walker cup side?

Any connections with Branksome Wood Road, Bournemouth?

If you know his date (or approx date) of death and it was in the England then we can find his details for his death certificate and usually that has his date of birth on it

    Hi Tony & TD,

I wish he was an amateur golfing champion but alas no!

My Ernest Millward was born 16th October 1919 and died in 1988. He had no middle name.

Really I was trying to find out his history during World War II as I can find nothing detailing it. I only found out his platoon a few weeks ago.

I have now though a book called 'Jock of 40 Commando Royal Marine - My Life from Start to Finish'. and that has a great deal of info of what actions his platoon undertook.

    Regards,

    Stu

    Hi Stu

Then I would revert you to post 3 above and suggest you obtain a copy of his service records (onlly available from the MOD via that link) these will tell you what he did where and when, its really the only place to start any quest like this.
