Hello, this is my first post so dont know if I have put it in the right section ? if not sorry - My grandfather Sydney Sarl served in the East Lancs Reg his service number was 3385551, this information I obtained from his marriage certificate as I can find nothing at all on any of the search sites about him whether military or personal, I did come across a document that had a "S. Sarl" listed as a passenger on a ship that set off from Egypt and its destination was London, the date stamp on the document is 1938 when he would have been around 25 yrs old- I have tried searching to see what the East Lancs were doing around that time but again cant find any information, is there anyone who could shed any light on this please. 30807_A001101-00280.jpg 30807_A001101-00280.jpg 28832567_1612025578883443_1395774963_n.jpg 28832567_1612025578883443_1395774963_n.jpg

Many thanks for taking the time to read this.

2nd Battalion East Lancashire Regiment departed Caterrick for Shanghai, China on 3rd January 1933. They left Hong Kong on the 12th January 1937, destination Bombay, India. The Battalion remained in India throughout 1938 and 1939.

    Hello again Mike,

I don't see how the man on the passenger list could have been in either the First or Second Battalions of the ELR, as the First Battalion had returned from Egypt (to Ireland) in January of 1937. Maybe the S. Sarl on the list is not your grandfather? Could you perhaps give us the date on the marriage certificate and do you have any other pages of the passenger list that might give a clue as to the unit being transported?
I will look through the monthly army lists and see if I can come up with a battalion that returned from Egypt and moved to Catterick Camp in November of 1938.

Hi and thanks for the reply, I dont have any more pages of the passenger list sorry, it could be that the S Sarl in question is not my grandfather, the details of the marriage certificate are he married in 24/2/1941 in Chester le Street, Durham, he was born in Cork when his father was serving in the army and he died in Scotland in 1971, although his marriage certificate quotes his name as Sidney the actual spelling is Sydney - hope this helps and thank you for your time

    Mike,

I've been looking at those passenger lists and the year looks to me to be 1936 (Ancestry agrees with me). I also note that the age of each man is given - 23 in the case of S. Sarl. A birth year of 1913 would suggest that it is your grandfather.

    Further confirmation.

Here are some of the officers on that journey:

Confirmation of the Liner Ormonde and the East Lancashire Regiment in the papers dated 18th November 1936.
Newspaper appears to have the wrong port.

thats great thank you so much was beginning to have doubts as to whether it was him or not as he is proving to be very elusive as far as the military is concerned, it did say catterick on the passenger list which again is confirmed in the paper cutting - much appreciated

Here are the monthly army lists from January, 1937 (corrected to 30 December, 1936), and February, 1937 (corrected to 30 January, 1937). The first shows 1 ELR "for Holywood", the second shows 1 ELR stationed at Holywood. I'm also wondering if the immigration officer's stamp on the above document is incorrect, since it indicates a date of 1938 and the port of London. I do agree that the manifest seems to show a date of 1936, not 1938.
I think that since the published army list and the above newspaper article are only off by about a month, it's likely that S. Sarl is your man. By any chance was your great grandfather Ernest Sydney Sarl, missing in 1917?

No Mike, I thought it might be your great grandfather or maybe great uncle as Ernest went missing around 16 June, 1917.

Been researching over the weekend and it turns out that the Ernest Sydney Sarl you mentioned is in fact my second cousin twice removed according to Ancestry.com

    Mike,
You will also need a death certificate. Scottish certificates can be ordered through.
