Hope I am doing this correctly as I have not joined a forum before. I sent off for my Grandad ‘s service records and need to come to grips with terminology and abbreviations to make sense of it. I am also hoping to benefit from other members’ superior knowledge of WW2 history so I can try to understand what my Grandad was doing and what he was going through. Thanks
Hello Tracey, If you can post scans of the pages up on to the forum, then members will be able to asssit in transalting some of the terms for you. Good luck going forward.
Welcome and good luck with your research. I would suggest, once you have his service records, to start a thread with his name/service number/ regiment under whichever forum you think most appropriate. Don’t worry too much there are people around here who are able to move things around, but you may already find his regiment under the unit history section for example. Once people know who he served with I have no doubt that someone will be along with information on their actions and other information. Posting a copy of the service records will assist greatly as it helps people home in on specific and relevant detail as opposed to generalities. There is already some help on here about interpreting service records, have a hunt around. Best of luck.
Hi Tracey and welcome if you are lucky we may do some translating as well TD should have added - use the upload a file option when making a new/reply post
Tracey, when you create a message you will notice a 'Upload a file' button. Have the images on your computer (Max 2MB) and then choose the one you want. Personally I prefer to load them as thumbnails, takes up less space on the post and members can open them full size.
Tracey, I have obtained 4 service records in the last 12 months, they generally take 4-5 weeks. Whilst waiting try the search facility (top right) for further information. goodluck with your research. Graham.
Thank you TD. This is a Freudian type slip, as I spent the whole of last week salting our University paths and roadways.
