I am researching my Fathers Army service, I have obtained his service record and I have quite a lot of other paperwork. I am trying to get a better understanding of his service. I am also interested if any members have any information on where the following photographs may have been taken Sids large army group shrunk.jpg

Hello, great photos, if you post his service number to identify him there are a few people around here who may be able to help.

I wonder if any members would be kind enough to help me understand this better, either on the forum or via private message. I can remember he mentioned serving in North Africa, Italy and ending his service in Austria but would love to know more. I am planning a visit to the REME museum in the spring but would love to know more before I go

    Hi,

You've attached a copy of an Army form B102 central registry Index Card, maintained in the UK, on which “shorthand” details are recorded of some (usually not all) detail recorded on a soldiers B103 forms.

Past experience on the forum informs members that it is always better to have sight of the soldiers B103 forms. Do you have them?

    To start off:

TOS = taken on strength (i.e. joined/rejoined unit)
SOS = struck off strength (i.e. left unit)
X list, see X lists (Service Records)
LIAP see The meaning of "FAP" and "Leave LIAP"?
    CMF = Central Mediterranean Force

Can’t find your father on the casualty lists (wounded, missing, POW, KIA) although I know from my father’s records that doesn’t necessarily mean to say that he didn’t end up in hospital at any time.

I can't remember him ever telling me that he was ever injured, he always told me he spent time on Tank Recovery driving Scammells & Matadors and in Workshops and felt very fortunate that he was normally a little away from the fighting. In the later stages I believe he was at HQ near Graz

    Hi,

If you attach copies of the B103 pages I’m sure members will be able to give you full chapter and verse on your father’s movements.

First photo was probably taken in North Africa (Egypt) with the officers clutching pith helmets/bombay bowlers

On AFB102 first two units are
763 Lines of Communication Troops Workshop
    Headquarters British Troops Workshop

    Further down are mentioned
97 Heavy Anti Aircraft Regiment Workshop
    683 Infantry Troops Workshop

    Good morning !

    just a thought..................

Hewitt is not a very common name and it set me thinking that when I first joined the 4th QOH the driver on my Stuart Honey tan also had the same surname and was promptly nick-named "Hewie".

He is pictured and named in the back row.

    Any relation ?

It seems that my apologies are due when I wrote "Hewitt is not a very common name"
Since writing the above I have been investigating online and see that not only is it well known but that it is a very honourable name, as this link will show:

    Hi Ron
Nice picture and the fact that you have the names on the back is amazing. I think I worked it out right that the chap "Hewitt is 5 to the right of you, with a slightly light uniform. I know of no relation that matches and one of my many other interests is Family History so I have most Hewitt's listed.......

I noticed that there is a mention at the top of the B103-2 above of "Arnold".

Arnold is located North of Nottingham and was a RAOC Mobilisation Center as my Dad was there in 1941.

As some of the RAOC became REME units in 1942 it could be the same place under a new name.
