Hi Hugh, Apologies for asking if you have come across my uncle. Private Edmund Kenneth Buck 13th Kings Own Liverpool Rifles. He survived his time in Burma. He arrived back in Pier Head Liverpool. He had left Liverpool 8th December 1941 with the 13th Liverpool Kings Own. He boarded the S S Oronsay 7th December 1941. His wife my mums sister aunt Marjorie had gone down to the Pier Head to meet a guy at the Liver Buildings. Who was going to take her aboard the Oronsay for lunch. This was organised by my g/dad Captain Alfred Edward Berry of the Alexander Towing Co. Tug S S Bramley Moore. His tug was available as a standby tug. And he saw my uncle and aunty and spoke to them. The port side was not against the wharve. Just on 3pm the call was given for non passengers to go ashore. The ship pulled away from the wharve soon after 4-00 pm. My mumhad taken me from school to meet my aunt at the Liver Buildings as she thought she would be very upset.. Which she was when we met her. They had married in 1937. Unfortunately my aunt had an affair while uncle Ken was away at war. My mum got the information that uncle Ken was on his way home and due to arrive at the Pier Head. I'm not sure due to Senior Moments. It was very late 1945 or early 1946.. My aunt had taken off and nobody knew where she had gone. My mum took uncle Ken to my mums other sister aunt Dora whose husband had ony been back from the Middle East for a couple of weeks. I never did get to see uncle Ken. Although we did speak on the phone a few times. Arranged a couple of meetings but missed each other. Even managed to remember his mother and step father's address. Had been to the apartment as my mum wanted to see Mrs Dowell as her name was then. Also Mr Dowell. 99 Essendine Mansions Maida Vale London.
Just over 12 years ago i started to look through and search my family genealogy. uncle Ken was going to be part of it. I found that he had married again to a lady Vilma Dolores Woodhouse "nee Squires" had a daughter Pauline Woodhouse. My uncle Ken married , Vilma Dolores Woodhouse July Qutr 1959 at Westminster, Middlesex, Greater London. Their son was born Francisco J F Buck, April Qutr 1965. Hendon Middlesex Greater London.
uncle Ken had a sister born 1911 in old Swan liverpool. She married and had 2 sons and a daughter. I have tried to get in touch with them but to no avail. The son Francisco also. That has been most strange by shear luck i spotted an email that i had sent to him at My Heritage. I have been waiting for an answer but non after 2months.sorry for rambling on a bit long Hugh. I am going to have my tomorrows only because of those guys losing their TODAYS. Wish I could help but i can only type with one hand Very BestRegards to You and all the team on WW2 Talk. Ken Bery
    ps Regards to Steve.

    Steve,

if your uncle was in the 13th King's he would have been on Operation Longcloth, the first Chindit expedition. Fellow forum member Bamboo 43 has an excellent website called: Chindit Chasing Operation Longcloth which you should check out first.

    Chindit Chasing, Operation Longcloth 1943

It is still possible that he transferred to the 1st King's and served on Operation Thursday so I will check my database.

    Steve,

Edmund Kenneth Buck does not appear on my database and neither does he appear in the official casualty lists, so we know that he was not wounded during his time in Burma. What information do you have that he served with the 13th battalion King's Regiment (Liverpool)?

    Hi Simon,

Ken has already been in contact with me via my website. Sadly, I too had nothing for him in regards his uncle. On his post today, I think he was sending his regards to me at the end there and you might have taken this to be his name (Steve).

    Best wishes

Reading your post it seem you have not yet applied for Edmund Bucks service record from the MOD, it will be necessary in order for you to find out where he was and which units he was with, the link is -

    Steve,

I am slightly confused, which is not unusual. The post says, "my uncle. Private Edmund Kenneth Buck"

Hi Simon, Sorry i think it is probably me that added to my uncle Kens !3th Kings Own, Liverpool Regiment or Rifles. On the Oronsay they are referred as Kings I am not quite sure, but i think the King Own Liverpool Rifles came from the Napier Barracks Karachi. The used abreviations KOLR or similar. Apologies for my wrong information. Last August 15th 2017 on Napier Barracks web site I found Group photo of 13 troopers Dress shots, shirts, Walk Socks, puttees, Boots reflecting sun ad Bush Hats. It stated I am sure that they were the last 13 of the original S S Oronsay, SS Duchess of Athol and the new ship m/v Andes. You will know the reasons for transshipment.
I found another guy but am trying to get his proper surname, something like (engig) but wait till i find it. It was sheer chance i saw a wee note in an email One brother to another, Dad was so uncooperative in telling us about the war. Other brother, "he did say he was in Poona training for a while. But thats all you will want to know. Will close with that Best Regards to You Simon & Steve.

    Kenneth,

I wonder if the KOLR that you mention should be KORL as in the King's Own Royal (Lancaster) Regiment. One of their battalions took part in the second Chindit campaign alongside the 1st King's (Liverpool).

Hi Guy's, This email is to all Administrators and Very Senior Members. This site is a Credit to you all. Already i have seen so much peace of mind, given to mum's, dad's, sister's, brother's, niece's, nephew's, aunt's, uncles, all other rellies, friends, acquaintances and even stranger's who new a guy who had been in the Forces. The Camaraderie and "Sense of Humour" between you all is very precious. I really do feel that Ord Wingate must have been some one extra special to all his Leaders and Men.
Steve's Award for Operation Longcloth was well deserved. I hope some of the Senior Members might think something similar for WW2Talk. Being in NZ and little unfit i am unable to do anything. It really is quite amazing to see the people emailing WW2Talk more and more. Hoping my sister in Liverpool maybe getting some information for You about the guys on the beach at Formby out of Liverpool. Thanks again Steve & Simon. Best Regards Ken B

All the Birth Marriage and Death Documents are obtained from Ancestry UK. A guy from Ancestry could only tell me that the 3 death Documents for Vilma Dolores Buck were probably her request. Uncle Ken's father was killed in WW1. Chester Regiment his name was Edmund Brown Buck. I think i mentioned to you that i had a few odd phone calls many years go. I think they were all the same guy, but tried to disquise his voice wanting to know about my Uncle Ken. There was nothing I could really tell him..He appeared to be rather slow with answers. I did find his email address on my Heritage by sheer luck. Sent a couple of emails and also to My Heritage. But no replies. Thanks Again tD Best Regards Ken B

In all reverence Hebridean Chindit. I was a Student Graduate in Renfrew Scotland For 2 1/2 years. Don't think genealogy was of any interest to us working class in those days.Met the most beautiful of a Scots girl, would like to go out with her. Answer was, she would like to go out with me, but no romance. As she had a fiancee at University in Edinburgh. Kissed her on the cheek at least twice. Left Scotland July 1953 and went to sea. I know she married her Fiancee 1958. Never invited inside her home, had to only leave her at the end of her street. Her dad didn't like Englishmen especially Liverpudlians. I can remember she said, "Liverpoolians". Well 2008 started to look into my family tree. My nana on dads side was a Sinclair of Unst Inverness. My dads side were Daniel "Ferguson" Berry from Gourock Glasgow an Ironshipbuilder of some repute. Funnily enough my arrival at Glasgow Central in 1951 I felt as I knew the land i had arrived in. A huge Sgt of Police " Obviously an ex RSM of The Scots Guard" asked me. " who i was and where was i Going to, to do what. Met him again a couple of time and he was an ex RSM of the Scots Guards. When Billy Connoly came along on TV. I reckoned the Sergeant had been Billy Connolys elocution teacher. Never knew one could get so many F*&% in one sentence. Apologies for rambling on. What i really want to say is your Quote is i understand what you mean smile "biggrin", but i would love to see " Big Yin". Ya nae can na tel how it would na go" We'd be lost without you and the rest of your clan of administrators. Very Best Regards Ken Berry.
ps My wife's name was Greer originally MacGregor. 5th generation NZ'er. Family immigrated from Scotland via Liverpool. Lineage goes back to King Alpin and Pope Gregory IV th 769. g/uncle 63? times removed was Robert the Bruce who life was saved after a Boar attacked his horse, Which threw him. Then the Boar went for R the B. Another cousin pulled a young Oak tree sapling out of the ground and beat ???? out of the Boar. Big Grin this time his name was Peter the Perfect MMMMmmmm. 1700's is as far as we get, other than surnames, and a rebelious Appin streak that resulted in a re-location in 1746... :D
My mum's dad ended his working days at Brown's as a ship's carpenter... passed in '63...
