Hi there I'm new to the forum so please excuse any mistakes. I am looking for info regarding my Dutch gt grandater. Edzo luttjebour joined the Dutch resistance when he was 14 and became know to the Gestapo so he had to flee Holland. From what i know Edzo ended up in Wolverhampton where he met my gt nan. i assume he joined the princess Irene brigade as they were stationed at Wolverhampton. ( My grandad and him didn't get on and edzo would not speak about the war so I have limited info) All I have been told is he was eventually sent to java and Sumatra and fought the Japanese. From my own research ive seen that the Irene brigade only sent 150 men to Ceylon and they later formed the korps insulide. I also know Edzo was called up in 1947-50 to fight in the Indonesian revolution. I have a certificate to prove this. My question is , I'm sceptical about edzos ww2 career as he only states 5 years service with Dutch army in his right to stay in the UK documents and nothing else. That would indicate due to serving in the Indonesian revolution his service started in 1945 however, he definatley fled holland as his sisters had to help him and they confirmed that to be true and he also as stated met my gt nan while in Wolverhampton which again ties in precisely with the stationing of the Irene bridge. My question is does anyone know anything more that could help me or know where i could find out more such as a service record for Edzo that would prove he served in the war. Many thanks Lew.

Welcome Lew, All escapees from Occupied Europe went through a screening process at the Royal Victoria Patriotic School in London before being released to their relevant National Authorities or to British Intelligence - the RVPS files are to be found in the WO series at TNA Kew. The Dutch going to the Far East in 44/45 formed in many cases part of SOE's Anglo/Dutch Country Section which was part of Force 136.
There's a POW entry for D. E. A. Lutjeboer on Find My Past for 1944 Dutch East Indies. Edit. Found another POW entry for Java using that spelling findmypast.co.uk
Hi guys thanks for the responses. My grandad never mentioned his father being a P.O.W however, as mentioned he never spoke about much so he may have been. I'll look at the archives now. Does anyone know if that is the Irene brigade uniform he is wearing ?
Hi Lew, There is a display of Princess Irene Brigade insignia on this forum. Prinses Irene Division Edzo has the Princess Irene beret badge. The shoulder patch is hard to make out, but from the position of the Lion's legs I would say it was 1944 vintage (1944-1947 ?). He's lacking the shoulder title. I believe O.R.s where allowed to wear ties from late 1944 onward. Regards ...
Thanks Cee I thought it was. The lack of P.I.B shoulder patch confused me. I just really want to know if he was actually in the second world war with the PIB as I can't find anything an only have a few story's that may be wrong. I know he definatley retired in 1950 as a corporal but this may have been with the Dutch national army and not the PIB as his certificate for his involvement in the Dutch indo war states "land army" with no specific divioson or brigade. It also states he was posted to java from 1947-50.
Lew, There is some info on this page on what became of the PIB post war. Ontbinding van de Brigade - Prinses Irene Brigade They were dissolved on July 16,1945, however, the official date for disbandment is given as December 24, 1945. The Princess Irene Regiment began it's formation after April 1946. I'm not sure what was retained or changed with their insignia during this early period? A Google Translation of the period from 1946 onward: "On April 15, 1946, fifteen Infantry Regiments were established in the context of the construction of the post-war Dutch army. Among them there was also an Infantry Regiment "Princess Irene", which Arnhem received as a location. The conscripts of the class 1945, who joined this Regiment, formed the 3rd Battalion "Princess Irene" which was shipped to Indonesia in the autumn of 1946 as part of the Ie Division "7-December". In the following years, new battalions were formed from conscripts of the following illuminations, which were sent to Indonesia: the 4th Battalion as part of the 2nd Division, the 5th Battalion as part of the 3rd Division, the 6th Battalion as part of the F -Brigade, the 7th Battalion, part of the H-Brigade. These battalions, after an honorable service in Indonesia, returned to the Netherlands and demobilized. They left 92 dead behind, resting on the archives of the Archipelago. On May 31, 1948 the Regiment received a great honor. It was elevated to Royal Regiment by Royal Decree. H.K.H. Princess Juliana Regentes of the Kingdom, in this acting on behalf of H.M. Queen Wilhelmina, considered it desirable to give the Regiment a name, which indicates the special relationship, in which this Regiment stands up to the Royal House. She never carries the name 'Garderegiment Prinses Irene'. On 12 March 1952, Queen Juliana grants the "Fuselier" predicate to the Garderegiment Princess Irene. Soldiers receive from this moment the title "Fuselier". The officers and non-commissioned officers may add to their rank "der Fuseliers"." Regards ...
Cheers Cee I know he definatley served post war. The pic I have of him on the back has a printing date of September 1945. So he was definatley in service in late 45. Would love to know more but have no clue where to start looking. Regards
Cee He was born in 1925 in scheemda. He would be about 20 in 1945. I know he joined the resistance at 14 in 1939 which is why he had to flee Holland or this is what I'm led to believe.
Yeah that's him. It's a shame my mom was never interested as she spent a lot of time with him when she was younger.
Hello Lew, After the war ended the Dutch were eager to help liberate NEI. Do you have your grandfathers medal for service in NEI? Because heavy combat broke out the Dutch soldiers were put ashore in Malaysia. I have researched this period thou mainly mid-java and no Princess Irene there as I remember but if I am not wrong there was a battalion with 4 Brigade on East Java. Give me a chance to check through my Dutch library in the weekend. Forward your e-mail adress in a private message then it might be easier for me to find you again. Cheers TijgerB
