    Johnny Hopkins was my mother’s uncle. My partner is putting together a family tree for my parents, my mum was talking about him and his brothers on Sunday.

    Thank you for all the details .... we’re quite amateur at this stuff. We had more success finding his brother Jim Hopkins. He was 77 Squadron (Bomber Command)... his life ... particular the shooting down of his Halifax on 1st September 43 features on a number of websites and pages. Pete

    My maternal grandfather Walter Richards (Stoker) was on that ship when it was sunk. He lost all of his mates. Presumably they knew each other. I know he was picked up by a South African cargo vessel, and taken back to blighty. The admiralty charged him for losing his kit. He never spoke of this to his family so i guess it hit him pretty hard.
