It's about time I got around to giving these photos a good home. Each man will have his own thread. Eventually.

    Reference: WO 373/63/24
    Description: Name McSorley, David
    Rank: Guardsman
    Service No: 2700557
Regiment: 2 Battalion Scots Guards, 201 Guards Brigade
Theatre of Combat or Operation: Escape and Evasion
    Award: Military Medal
Date of announcement in London Gazette: 01 March 1945
    Date: 1945
"Captured in ITALY near SALERNO on 12 September 1943, McSORLEY was imprisoned at GORLITZ (Stalag VIII A) and LAMSDORF (Stalag VIII B ).
With the idea of escape in mind, he volunteered for work and was sent to ARBEITSKOMMANDO 768 at KUMAU. Three other P/W also were determined to regain their freedom, and a fortnight was spent in perfecting plans.
On 28 June 1944 they gained access to the Red Cross stores by removing a panel from one door, securing a key to another, and climbing over a third. Previously they had removed bricks from the outer wall, merely leaving a thin layer of plaster; breaking through this aperture, they reached the outside of the camp.
For eight days they walked towards HUNGARY before a farmer gave them civilian clothes and promised a guided to YUGOSLAVIA. When several weeks later the guide had not appeared, McSORLEY and another member of the party proceeded alone, were betrayed by a civilian, and handed over to the local police. There were interned at GRENAVA and immediately explored the possibilities of escape. Before their arrangements were perfected, however, they were released on the approach of the Germans.
McSORLEY, accompanied by an AMERICAN airman, walked to ROZINDOL, from where their journey was arranged. On 18 September 1944 they were evacuated to ITALY."

He's 18 years old in this picture.

Lees Chadwick Scots Guards F Company pictured on the right, not sure who the other two gentlemen are.

    Citation:
"In the night attack on the Tobacco Factory Area, BATTIPAGLIA on Sept. 11th, this Guardsman showed outstanding bravery and dash.

He personally accounted for several German machine-gunners with his own bayonet. On one occasion a Spandau opened up at him at short range, one bullet grazed his lip, one went through his steel helmet and three through his haversack - he at once charged the post and killed the occupants.

He was last seen in company with a Sgt. and another guardsman attacking a more distant Spandau post and was later reported "Missing".

On Nov 2nd he walked into our lines in civilian clothes."

Does anyone have any more squad photos to add? I would be really grateful as I find they're really useful for research ... WW2 or pre-war ...

    All the best,

    Hi

    Hi Diane,
I noticed your post on Jim Hutson, he was my uncle, sadly my father Wilfred (Larry) Lawrence Hutson passed away a few years ago. But we his three sons all live in Bridlington East Yorkshire, We have visited Jim's gravesite over the years and laid flowers in remembrance, we've narrowed the time and location of when he was killed in action from the war diaries. There are only a few British servicemen in the cemetry just behind the fire station but still a beautiful and emotional place.
