Sorry Ronnie I should have said some WW1 records can be found on Ancestry as Tricky has just pointed out. My great uncles weren't there, but the MOD had them.

  3. Sorry I don't know. He was born in 1898 I believe and joined Black Watch in 1916 if that helps.
Thanks for your help with this.

Hi Ronnie - your cousin here. Yes he was born in 1898 and died on October 9, 1940. He was in the Pioneer Corps 13000386. I also have an article from The People's Journal in Dundee, and I will forward it to you as well as a photo of the grave and headstone as soon as I locate it.

Hi Ariom, you should be able to locate the grave from the plan I attached previously and his plot details can be found via the CWGC website.

When I tried to visit the cemetery there was a whole load of road works going on and I didn't know how to access it from another route not being familiar with the roads in that part of Dundee. Glad you've found Ronnie here too.

I would think thats his WW2 service number - any chance of finding his WW1 service number whilst he was in the Black Watch??

    Hi Ronald,
Many thanks for posting the two photos. It helps bring him alive for me after researching the event of his death in Falmouth in 1940.
I don't know if you have seen the video-book style presentation I put on YouTube that covers the bombing of the Wesley Chapel in Falmouth:

Your family can rightly be proud of his service for his country.

Cornwallphil, you should be proud of the tribute you've put together. That's just amazing. Thank you for sharing that with us. Very moving.

Thanks so much for this very moving video. Seeing my grandfather and the place he died means so much. Yes we are all very proud of him. I can't thank you enough for this. Many regards.

Thank you for your kind words. However it is men like Hugh Taylor who have allowed me to live in freedom and peace. At the going down of the sun, and in the morning, we will remember them.

  12. CornwallPhil,
What can I say in response to your video. What a tremendous amount of effort on your part. I can only echo the sentiments of my cousin Moira in Canada in that this fills in several gaps in our knowledge of my grandad and how and where he died. Locations which were just pictures in our imaginations (all different) have now been turned into real locations and scenes which we can all see and now identify with as being real.
A simple thank-you somehow doesn't seem adequate, but nonetheless we really do thank you for your contributions and you substantial efforts in what you have done here.
I was visiting my mother in hospital today, Hugh Taylor's daughter. Unfortunately she fell in Glasgow yesterday and has broken her hip and was operated on today. At 94 it will take a bit of effort on her part to get through the healing process but she is a strong person, like her Dad, and she will get there.
I was telling her today that I had found these pages about my Grandad on this site and I shall let her see everyone's contributions on these pages when she gets home and is settled.
Once again, many many thanks to you all from the Hutchison,Taylor and Shaw families.

My best wishes to your mother for a speedy recovery. As an historian I am glad to be able to help piece together the pieces of the jigsaw for people so that the stories of that brave generation may be recorded and told. Knowing that in that small way I have helped your family is thanks enough.

Hugh Taylor was my great grandfather..Peter Taylor was my grandfather... before his passing he presented me with not only his campaign medals but also his fathers too... My granddad would recall the memories he had of his father Hugh.
I like Ronnie, I am proud to say how our family fought for Britian.
