Does anyone have a photo of Private Hugh Taylor's headstone in the Balgay Cemetery in Dundee that they would be willing to share, please?. He is buried in Section I.I. Grave 451. He served in the Pioneer Corps and was in a forces canteen in the Wesley Chapel, Falmouth, Cornwall, when it was hit by a high explosive bomb on the evening of 9th October 1940.

I have found this in the Dundee Courier and Advertiser 11th October 1940. Taylor served with the Black Watch in WW1.

Good find there Guy. I'm not subscribed to findmypast at the moment, are you able to open the 2nd article from the attached? His wifes name isn't listed at CWGC site. The article seems to indicate her name as Helen Conway, but the text maybe scrambled and has nothing at all to do with Hugh.

The cemetery isn't too far from Ninewells Hospital. I've an appointment with my son there at the end of November. If the clinic isn't running late or bad weather, I'll see if I can pop along and take a picture to add here. I'll go and see if there is a layout plan of the cemetery on line to help find it.

If you believe that the Balgay Cemetery in Dundee is close to the Ninewells hospital - then I have a bridge I'd like to sell you…..

how about say - NINE miles……here in Canada - that is peanuts - but through Lochee to Dundee ?

    Cheers

Hugh Taylor is my Grandfather on my mother's side.
I would like to thank those who have posted information about him on these pages.
Sadly I never met him. He was killed 12 years before I was born.
My mother, his daughter, Mary Helen, the oldest of his children, is still alive and lives in Glasgow. She will be 95 in February. My Aunt Carrie and uncles Hugh and Peter have all passed within the past 10 years. My mother is sitting next to my Grandad in the attached family picture.
I was told that he was a kind and quiet man who lived and worked for his family.
I am proud as anything that he fought for Britain in both WW's.

Welcome Ronnie to the forum. I never did get a chance to get to the cemetery to take a photo. Will probably have an annual check up for my son at Ninewells next February. Would you still like a photo of the grave?

Thank you so much for posting the photographs. He really does have a kindly face. Send my greetings to your Mum.

Have you thought about applying for his service record? It costs £30 and a few weeks wait. Forms are real easy to fill in and if the personnel office can't find it, they will return the money to you.

  17. Thanks for your quick reply and your comments. I registered on the Forces War Records site and got some limited info. Can I get a more comprehensive record elsewhere? Would that show his WW1 record the same as WW2?

Hi Ronnie, for the official service records apply here Get a copy of military service records: Apply for the records of someone who's deceased - GOV.UK

Fill out the forms and send off to Glasgow. Get Mum to sign as next of kin. A date of birth will help them search.

You might get lucky and get both WW1&WW2 records. A lot of WW1 records were destroyed in a fire and what survives are referred to as the burnt records.

My great uncle from Glasgow served in both and I was lucky enough to get both sets. When you receive them upload them here to get help deciphering all the abbreviations etc.

Do me a favour and log into Forces and find the box about the automatic renewal of subscription. They do not have the official documents as they claim and as experience taught me they will keep on charging you if you over look the auto renewal box.

Keep us posted about your progress. Cheers - Maria

Trouble is for WW1 service records we have 3 x Hugh Taylor

Hugh Taylor Black Watch (Royal Highlanders), Labour Corps 2704, 222033

Hugh Taylor Black Watch (Royal Highlanders) 3534

Hugh Taylor Black Watch (Royal Highlanders), Army Ordnance Corps S/22341, 043563

Ronald - any idea what service number he had in WW1 - if you have his medals it will inscribed on the rim. If you can find that out then I can see what if any records he has available
