Looking for any info on Lord Herschell - I have a general overview from

Rognvald Herschell, 3rd Baron Herschell - Wikipedia

And some specifics of his service

    HERSCHELL, The Lord
    WE Commission
    2/Lt 4/12/1942
    Lt 4/6/1943
    Capt 10/7/1945
    3rd Bn from 5/9/1943
    2nd Bn 1/3/1945
Prisoner of War, Italy, 23/4/1945 to 30/4/1945
    2nd Bn (Adj) 10/7/1945

    the POW bit I have

    April 23 1945
Daybreak around the leading companies in the outskirts of Copparo, having advanced seven miles, but still there were no signs of the missing company. The Pioneer Officer, Lt. Lord HERSCHELL, took a jeep to try and find it, but he himself did not return, and was later learned to have been captured.

Interested in any more info to flesh out his story and it would be good to see a photo.

Thanks for that (even if my Scottish sensitivities are twitching at their "King of England" description) - I had been assuming a Lord would be someone whose photo was easy to find somewhere.

Hi Maria, I'd had a look at FMP and it has missing then now not missing so seems to tie in with the POW bit.

    Thanks

Thanks for posting Diane. Wonder what weather they got in the Shetlands for the honeymoon. Hope the bride didn't mind seclusion.

Thank you Diane - I have a photo on the way that seems to show Officers of the Battalion (not sure if 2nd or 3rd) so that photo may help pick him out (but maybe not - I'm not great at identifying faces).

I had a look in "Something about a soldier" and they have a photo of the 3rd Battalion Officers in 1943 but I guess it was before he joined as he isn't in there and he isn't in the index

    Alistair,
If you have difficulties when you receive it, please do post it up. I'm sure you'll get plenty of opinions.

I'm guessing he is in here somewhere - not sure if this is 2nd or 3rd Battalion officers or when it was taken.

His AB439, I also got a 1944 diary, I have only had a quick scan of about 1/3rd of it and he seems to have been used as cover in the Carrier & Mortar platoons before settling in the Pioneer platoon. These bits were destined for the bin before they were rescued and stuck on Ebay where I got them - I wonder what else went out.

Do you think they're wearing Africa Star ribbons? [edit criteria : operational area of North Africa between 10 June 1940 and 12 May 1943]

1IG were issued with theirs in Italy on January 1st 1944

He was the one who looked most likely to me (although a lot of the ones with caps aren't helping us) but the ribbon seems to rule him out - he didn't join a Battalion til late 43 so wouldn't have the Africa Star.

I'd fire a copy off to RHQ CG to see if they have any idea or, if there are any veterans around who'd be able to ID some individuals. (It'd be a fine addition to their Archives anyway if they don't have a copy.)

Well done you - and the seller - for rescuing these items.
