Any info on this man :

    BARLOW FRANK

    Rank: Private Service No: 4856554

Date of Death: 12/09/1942 Age: 30

Regiment/Service: Leicestershire Regiment 2nd Bn. Panel Reference: Panel 10. Column 2.

    Memorial: BROOKWOOD 1939-1945 MEMORIAL

Additional Information: Son of Joseph and Sarah Margaret Barlow, of North Clifton, Nottinghamshire. The BROOKWOOD 1939-1945 MEMORIAL commemorates nearly 3,500 men and women of the land forces of the Commonwealth who died during the Second World War and have no known grave, the circumstances of their death being such that they could not appropriately be commemorated on any of the campaign memorials in the various theatres of war. Not sure if he was on the Laconia but not listed as a casualty although it's not a complete list. Could have been on Niyo Maru if a POW although I can't find a loss list.

Enlisted 1932 in Worksop , served 2 yrs in UK. Then posted to India and Palestine. Left the regs in early 1939 but promptly recalled , WIA in Crete 1941. Stayed in the Middle East at ME OCTU when the Regt was sent to the Far East. Departed unkown Middle East port on the 30/7/42 and belieived KIA at sea 12/9/42. Seems to have been along time travelling but only 3 ship losses in the area on the 12th. The RMS Laconia the only one carrying British Army personel.

If you believe he was aboard the SS Laconia then he should be listed within 'Casualties at Sea: SS Laconia' file held at the national archives.

Doesn't mean the ship he was on was sunk. He could have died of natural causes on board.

Would have been an idea have told us you had that at the beginning of the thread.
That would save members looking for info that you already know .

Looking at Royal Naval Casualties for 12 Sept 1942, there only seems to be 1 sinking

Royal Navy casualties, killed and died, September 1942 - Yes I know he willl not appear on this list as hes Army but wanted to sort out if another ship had sunk that day

    TD

I lied - there are Army on the list as DEMS gunners

Thanks TD , I have checked the list. She was carrying UK Army and RAF as well as RN and MN. Polish guards for the Italian POW's and some civilians. I don't believe the list is complete , I may be barking up the wrong tree but this seems to be the most plausible answer. Least the records show he wasn't in the Far East as a POW with the rest of his Regt.
