this might be a stupid question but here goes.... If a soldier was 'attached' or 'posted to' a different regiment or company would he wear that regiments or companies cap badge or would he wear his original? Basically I am getting my Granddads medals framed and I want to include his cap badge. From his records he was in the RASC but throughout WW2 he was attached and posted to various other companies. Hope this makes sense.
'Attached' would suggest that he remained RASC. What 'other companies' was he sent to ? Were they not also RASC units ?
I'm guessing they were all under the RASC umbrella. Here is a list that I have : Posted to No.1 Communication Motor Transport Company Posted to 34 Motor Coach Company Attached to Auxiliary Pioneer Corps Attached to Kings Shropshire Light Infantry Posted to No.58 Troop Carrying Company Posted to 249 Troop Carrying Company If he would of 'worn' different badges for any of these units I would like to know as to include them in my mount. Please forgive my pedantry, I am intrigued by the semantics you use - You say "I want to include his cap badge". Do I take it that you don't actually have 'his' cap badge and are looking to acquire one for your display? Personally I find this fashion for 'completing collections' for the sake of a neat display one I can't understand. It is mixing the stuff he actually owned, touched and connected with, with unconnected items which may or may not prove to be accurate. There is a huge kick to be had from knowing you are looking at and handling the real thing - especially if its part of your family history. Watering it down with replacements and replicas risks devaluing the whole thing.
