Matteo, would the Regimental History of THE COLDSTREAM GUARDS 1920-1946 suffice? I'm assuming you are chasing the Third Battalion.? Stu.
Yes. I'm researching good informations to help Salerno1943 Association. I'm interested in 3rd Coldstream in whose fought Cpl.Blackham and Sergeant Wright VC. British Second World War soldiers given military burial three years after amateur historians found remains
matteo, make contact with me over the weekend & one will scan the relevant pages & send on. I'm aware of what you have mentioned. The Regimental History pages have dates & a month on each page. That runs through the all book. It may take a while to get back to you.
The History is available online, free to download The Coldstream Guards, 1920-1946, by Michael Howard and John Sparrow.
I recently tried to view the 3 COLDSTREAM war diary for 1943 only to be told it was closed until 2044. I have submitted an FOI which is currently under review. If it becomes available I can copy it for you. I have 201 Guards Brigade already it you would like that?
Hi Gary Not sure why you wasn't allowed to look at the diary, I've had a copy of the diary since 2013 and it contains 362 various pages. WO 169/10167 3 Coldstream Guards 1943 Jan-Dec Cheers Andy
If somebody has this War Diary, like 138 Bde published by Clanky, is very useful. I'm researching 29th Panzergrenadier Regiment casualties list too. All for Hill 270 researches.
Hi Andy, I thought that would be the case but since my FOI the file has now gone into access under review in Discovery rather than just being closed. The description is open document though so perhaps the file was in use by the MOD for the Lance Corporal Blackham investigations and did not get re-classified correctly on return. Cheers, Gary.
I've got the War Diary for the 16th DLI for the Salerno Landings and there isn't any Intelligence Summaries within it. I assume you are after any other Intelligence Summaries which give the details (units & location) of the German POW's taken, similiar to those in the 6th Bn Lincolns war diaries? I think not all the battalions kept a copy of Intelligence Summaries within their Diaries, and the few that may have are likely to be the most senior battalion within in a Brigade (saying that there isn't any 2/5th Leicesters diary either). Therefore, you've probably might have more chance of finding them in the Brigade war diaries, but i cannot confirm this as the only Brigade diary i've seen is the one for the 138th Brigade (and i've sent you any relevant pages from that already)
Just an update - I received my FOI response today. They did take an additional 10 days; I actually sent them a link to this thread to prove the information was already in the public domain: "Thank you for your enquiry of 21 August 2017 regarding a review of: WO 169/10167 - 3 Coldstream Guards We are pleased to tell you that, in consultation with the Ministry of Defence, it has been decided that this document can now be made available to the public at The National Archives, Kew.
