Hi, I've had this in my collection for sometime, but have no means to obtain any details on this German Soldier. The grave marker has the name XAVER DEPENHART 15.11.25 - 5.7.44 . He died aged 18 in the west, so I'm thinking this could have been a soldier in Normandy maybe? Any help very appreciated.

May be the maker of the grave marker mis-spelled the name. Xaver is German (typically from the south, Bavaria or Wuerttemberg. Buchau is a village close to my home town in Wuerttemberg, since 1963 called Bad Buchau (Bad = spa). It might be possible to search in local Bad Buchau archives for the name. Stefan.
Thanks Stefan for that useful info. Depenhart may be an uncommon name but not to say it must be an impossibility? I have just been on Google earth and searched the area of his possible resting place and come across this sign in street view at La Chapelle-en-Juger, Lower Normandy. So up that narrow Normandy road must be the burial ground then Piaf? Thankyou
Hey, I am searching for more photos from German first grave marker like that. That is for a non commercial project, to clear soldier’s destiny. That project is also useful for German research institutions like: VDK Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge DRK Deutsches Rote Kreuz vksvg Verein zur Klärung von Schicksalen von Vermissten und Gefallener Regards Uwe These two photos are from my own family.
Not sure if anyone is monitoring this string anymore. Found it via surfing the web. Depenhart is my surname. From what I know, it originated in Wittenberg, Germany. My original ancestor arrived in the USA in the mid 1800's and settled in Western Pennsylvania. As far as I know, anyone with my surname, I am related to them. This was a nice find for me as I did not know of any Depenhart's outside of the USA.
Hi Dan, just a quick search of the German records at Ancestry returns very little, but there are 47 family trees.
Hmmmm Looking at Ancestry database: All Germany, World War I Casualty Lists, 1914-1919 results for Depenhart There are 3 results for Depenhart and 2 of those are below: Xaver Depenhart date list number Xaver Depenhart date list number As I do not have worldwide membership I do not have access to the details of these records, and yes I realise they are WW1 records and he was apparently born 1925. TD
Probably fallen foul of the transcribers at Ancestry TD. Can't be in WW1 born 1925, probably a relative. I hope ancestry do a worldwide freebee soon, I see there are records close to the spelling of Jeeteman I'm researching. They must have added new archives.
Information is from Volksbund but is just what has already been posted in Post #3: Nachname: Depenhart Vorname: Xaver Dienstgrad: Gefreiter Geburtsdatum: 15.11.1925 Geburtsort: Buchau Todes-/Vermisstendatum: 05.07.1944 Todes-/Vermisstenort: St. Soben-Comburg Xaver Depenhart ruht auf der Kriegsgräberstätte in Marigny. Endgrablage: Block 1 Reihe 1 Grab 34 But as you now have his date of birth and birthplace try contacting the Deutsche Dienstelle asking for a copy of his service record and see if they comply. If they do you will know what unit he served in.
