    Hi all,

I'm taking the train home to Ottawa at the moment - going to the archives tomorrow - and I happened to look at imdb when I noticed this:

This HAS to be better than the other one, right? We hope.

It's due for release in November. It has Gary Oldman(!) playing Churchill. I hope he can do Churchill's voice and accent correctly.

The summary on imdb is: "Within days of becoming Prime Minister, Winston Churchill must face his most turbulent and defining trial: exploring a negotiated peace treaty with Nazi Germany, or standing firm to fight for the ideals, liberty and freedom of a nation."

I believe there's a trailer now but I can't look at videos on the train's limited WiFi.

    Cheers,
    Chris

    Trailer has a C47 in 1940.

Lots of crappish looking kit. B-Movie vibes.

I liked the look of the trailer. Oldman is class.

I went to see the Brian Cox "Churchill" in the week. To list its failings as history would take up far too much space. And these are not history nerd complaints - about uniform details and so on - it has played so fast and loose with actual fact as to be really quite infuriating. My recommendation to this erudite forum is not only to wait for it to come out on DVD, but to wait until it appears in a "3 for £20" offer in HMV. Or lower. Cox is, as ever, excellent, but he is playing with a crooked deck.

From trails that I have seen, Oldman hasn't got the voice even close but I can only hope it's better than that film above (C-47s in British service in 1940 notwithstanding) which is, verily, a crock of.... and it stinketh.

I do see where you are coming from regarding authenticity, but unfortunately
we most certainly do not live in a perfect world and to expect that transport planes that were in use in the UK would be available forthefilm is being very optimistic.
Churchill was quite unique in his speech and would be very hard for any actor to portray.
I will wait to pass judgement on the film, but if it helps to revive a lot of people's interest in what our father's and grandfather's fought for, then for me, it is worth accepting compromises.
    Regards
    Tom

I am hoping for a good drama which is accurate to the positions people had and their relationships with each other. (e.g. Churchill and his wife) which as I understand it, the Brian Cox film didn't even do.

I don't expect a lot of the kit and am more willing to forgive them if the focus is mostly on the political and strategic.

PS I was watching some of The Bridge Over Remagen recently in which every American tank is a Chaffee...

I know I started another thread about this when the trailer came out but that was the trailer.

I have a lot of questions but I know the film isn't out yet in the UK so NO SPOILERS.

I will say I give it 4.25 out of 5. Really, really enjoyed it :)

    That's my birthday!

Other than that most important point there's the matter of MONEY. Release dates are strategic decisions.

I saw the first trailer and thought it looked rubbish, but perhaps I need to give it a second look...

It's GOT to be better than that god-awful film with Brian Cox. "Churchill". I know they are set at opposite ends of the war, but I have been trolled on a film forum on Facebook by someone who describes himself as having attended the "Winston Churchill University of Life" and the "Bernard Law Montgomery Tank School" saying that it is completely accurate. I'm not going to rise to it, but feel like waving my degree certificates in his face.. On the other hand, maybe I could convince him to buy a bridge that goes up and down in London...it's for sale, you know. And Churchill must have crossed it as he tried to get D-Day cancelled....

There are a couple of scenes which I'm pretty sure never happened. If you would like to know because they would set you off I suppose I could send a PM. I hate posting "spoilers" if someone would rather not know.

But they are actually very effective scenes, and overall I do think it is a very good film.

edited P.S. probably best to view it as historical fiction

As I always say at least it keeps WW2 in the news which is always a good thing

There will always (be an England while there's a busy street) the rivet counters complaining the cigar was not the right type or his slippers were incorrect blah blah blah
