I see Photobucket just introduced a $40 MONTHLY charge to allow 3rd party hosting, and switched off everything shared up 'til now. Practically overnight.
Without even enabling links from shared pics so you can find and fix.

Thanks, Photobucket, you utter F-monkeys, thanks a F-ing bunch, you total and utter F-ing F-ing C-ing Cs.

So that's, errrr... quite a lot... of pictures on here now showing null.
Will endeavour to sort mine when I see, but now looking for best external photo-host... again.

The boy tells me imgur and flickr are the way forward...

May be that is why I have had such a problem getting on site.
Got a message saying my account had been lost, tried the recovery they offered that did not work.
Then an Email ( Thought they had lost my account) telling me to resubscribe.
will not bother if it is going to cost.

That's 99% of the numerous images I've uploaded here.

I would have thought - dont use anyone as at some point they will say "ah we can make more money out of this if we....................................."

Is it not possible to attach some software to the site for 'our' photos, or use something in the gallery that could allow external access, maybe a WW2 Photobucket ??

Just thinking out loud and seeing other social media type sites suddenly find ways of making cash whilst everyone does the work and they just sit back

We have that facility, TD. But we're run on a shoestring and not really set up to be a mass host. resources rather finite.
Imgur does seem massive.& stable... for the moment.

If PB had given a period of grace, or at least allowed easily refinding the images, I could live with it. But the approach they've taken feels more like ransomware than a legit site.

I realise about the shoestring, just thinking if charges were made to those that are not members - but I guess thats becoming complicated

    OK.
if you click to edit a post, then select BBcode view (top right), you can at least select a URL to relocate a particular picture.

'Course, they could have built that into their inevitable departure from the web, like civilised people, but there you go...

When is the annual patron up for paying? I know it went down well with most of the members that where prepared to cough up.
I'm more than willing to pay the same amount again. Its a small price to pay. If my memory is correct, it was £25 ,or £10 ?

$400 per year, with no / little warning! That's such a global shot in the foot, I wonder how long P/b can continue. Time, I think, to go through my own account to ensure I have a copy of everything currently hosted there. Just in case ...

To me, with each and every one of these messages now appearing all across the net, they are only advertising their own poor public relations.

Same here I've never used it.
Can't see anyone paying $40 per month for it.

Can people still access Photobucket or are their files now lost? Is it just a question of not being able to link to 3rd Party applications such as this Forum? The former means that all is not lost but the latter is downright ridiculous.

Personally, my files don't appear to be affected as I've never used Photobucket but several threads are now bare which makes reference to historic threads and posts almost meaningless. No wonder Adam et al are upset.

It's always been a risk of using third-party sites. Weren't there historical issues of photos disappearing when dormant accounts got deleted?
I've tended to upload photos directly to WW2Talk, though I hope I've resized them in most cases.
Is the issue with hosting here storage space, bandwidth for downloads, or both?

As well as uploading, I find I can still download my images.

All of these would be somewhere here on a PC, laptop, old hard drive, stick, disc etc but sometimes I am unable to find the original so I download it from photobucket. When you look for your downloaded image bear in mind the date of the image is the date it was originally uploaded.

I find I have 3,673 images being hosted, so it would take a while, in fact it would gobble up my data allowance as I have no broadband, just a phone link.

If they get round blocking my library, I expect they will have already been trousered up by image searching bots, which I imagine now are going to be rather short of new images to re-host.

I know in the past forum members have used it but start now just get your photos/info by year folder 2017 then in that by type/name/date
and make sure you have a few backups saves losing years of info an work
not being clever but never rely on the internet for your own stuff

You're right, of course--but it's proper pain in the behind. I don't have any family snaps or anything vital stored there, but I do have something like twelve years of contributions to another board and several dozen images here on miscellaneous threads.

Their doomed money-grab is their own affair, but their customers (and you are a customer whose presence and eyes have facilitated advertising contracts regardless of whether you pay for the service) deserve better than practically zero notice of a change which utterly transforms your relationship with the site. My own situation is a major inconvenience; if you have exceeded your limit for data storage since the change, you have literally been extorted for continued access to them.

I say their attempt is doomed as the considerable amount they will make from this one off influx of cash from less that 1% of their exisiting membership should be dwarfed by the almost total evaporation of advertising revenue as the site is abandoned by the vast majority.

Unless the business is on the verge of bankruptcy, this is extremely short-sighted.

I think they are/were collapsing, and this will just accelerate it. Been rife with spam and very slow on there for a year.

All about the way this has been done.
X month's notice and I could have easily salvaged some picture-heavy pages before the guillotine fell. Now it's a huge pain in the Gary.
(Looking into a mass edit that reformats embedded images to a link, but it's awkward stuff.)

Surprised they didn't demand payment in bitcoins...

Is it all photographs from photobucket or just some the reason I ask is some threads /posts are untouched with the photobucket images still there ?

I think that if you paid the tenner a year to upgrade total storage amount that contract may still run, with the change of terms only applying once it ends?

It's crash-tastic over there at the mo.
Anyone would think thousands of users are also downloading everything as they pull out.

Blogs, forums, websites, many looking pretty image-light at the mo... Well, many covered in Photobucket's message pic...
    Uncivilised.
