We are searching for the regimental picture of the #3 Squadron, 22nd Canadian Armoured Regiment (Canadian Grenadier Guards). We have searched as many locations as we know of; Library and Archives Canada, Canadian War Museum, DND, Canadian Grenadier Guards Museum, and have posted requests on talk forum 'Canada at War' as well as this one. If anyone has any information as to how I can source this picture, it would be appreciated. ps: We have been able to source the regimental pictures of squadrons #1, #2 and HQ, but not f#3. We know that a picture exists, because we saw one many years ago. Thanks for your help.
Sapperschild, Wondering if your post should state A, B or C Squadron as an armoured regiment did not use numbers to identify squadrons. Numbers were used at the troop level only. For each squadron there were four troops of four tanks each. Perhaps that will lead somewhere? I have asked a friend whose father led B Squadron from January 1945 if he has any information. Additionally, through forum member Klambie, I have the contact info for a researcher based in Ottawa. If you want to make use of his services, please send me a PM. Good luck
Thank you 17thDYRCH. Am afraid I have only ever seen reference to squadrons numbered as 1, 2 & 3 & HQ. The troops are also numbered numerically; my father-in-law was with the #3 Squadron, #4 Troop. Will check our resources for any information to squadrons by letter (A, B, C). If we don't have any luck tracking down this picture via the talk sites, we may well be at the point where we have to go the route of a researcher. Will let you know via PM. Thanks for the help.
According to the war diary, the Canadian Grenadier Guards used numeric squadrons as an armored regiment: HQ, No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 Squadrons. I believe this was modeled on the Grenadier Guards from the U.K.
You might try looking at the Canadian Grenadier war diaries at Heritage Canadiana. They often contain pictures. They start with this reel: T-12724 - pp. 862.
Yes, I have reviewed those diaries in depth, but found no pictures of the squadrons. Will keep looking. Thank you!
I stand corrected. (Dryan67 is an expert on all things Canadian ) I was referencing another resource where squadrons were titled A, B and C along with HQ.
Yes, I do have that book - actually Dryan67 had recommended that book to us when we were beginning our research in 2012. We ended up buying copies for family - a beautiful keepsake and very informative. Have used both extensively in our research - awesome book! We also have Fortescue Duguid's regimental history - another amazing book - great detail and old maps. Love it!
Hi everyone. I just wanted to get back to all of you, to let you know that in response to our post on this site a number of years ago, in which we indicated our search for a picture of the #3 Squadron of the Canadian Grenadier Guards, we received a call from the daughter of a Guardsman, whose son had come across our post in the course of his research into his Grandfather's WW2 service. She has provided us with a scanned copy of her Dad's picture, and has also forwarded the original to the CGG Museum in Montreal, who were also in search of this picture, having in their possession pictures of #1 and #2, but not #3. Our copy has found it's way onto our 'wall of remembrance', as well as family members. We want to express our sincere appreciation to everyone who assisted us in our long journey to learn of the wartime experience of my father-in-law, and to complete our picture collection. I have tried to upload a copy of the picture to this site, but receive an error message saying that the 'file is too large'. I will see if there is something I can do to allow me to post it here. Again, thank you all so much for your help.
