A puzzle. Has anyone who has knowledge of the HLI heard of a 328083 Pte George Laird RAMC in the Great War joining the Territorials after the Great War becoming a Major with the HLI in WW2? The medals are 15 trio RAMC (MID) 39/45 Star War and Defence Territorial Decoration 1942 with GV1 bar . on the Medal index card for the RAMC man it also has him Seaforths S/17917 and HLI 3299664 I know the HLI went to France in 1939.
This is an old thread, Nick could be a good contact for you. 1st Bn Glasgow Highlanders veterans & descendants. Cheers Maria
I've also just checked the 1st, 5th and 6th Battalion, HLI war diaries for France and he doesn't appear to be mentioned in those either. He may have been a staff officer with a Brigade, Div or Corps in France.
Does this tie in with his medal roll? Found this searching FMP military records using just the search term 3299664 findmypast.co.uk
Drew. Thanks for the help,Can you please check the 9th (GH) Battalion ,I have Col AH Menzies DSO with Major G Laird as Second in Command. No idea what date that is. I have one from 1931 with Laird G as Major which is in the HLI Cronicles. Another titled "extracts from the London Gazette as reprinted in Scottish Command Orders " 26/11/1937 territorial army reserve of officers saying Major G Laird from active list to be Major 1st November 1937. Theres an LG awarding Major Laird the TD. 1942. I will keep digging
I agree with nemesis. Major G. Laird in mentioned numerous times in the HLI Chronicles 1930-40, which goes up to January 1940, but is not mentioned in the HLI Chronicles 1940-50. In the first Chronicles, he is listed at one point as the 2nd i/c of 2nd Battalion Glasgow Highlanders, but the history of the 2nd Battalion GH 1939-45 does not mention him at all.
. thanks for the input. I have him in the ninth , it looks very much that he was a Private in the RAMC in the Great War. He re enlisted in the HLI in 1920. In the HLI cronicles it quotes him having joined the HLI immediatley after the great war and has had the unique distinction, post war as having served in every rank except CSM. He then retired to the reserve. The photocopy page I am holding is undated but it mentions 1938. He must have went to France with the BEF. Thanks again for the input, and the very valuable assistance
I only have the battalion war diaries for the ones that were in France during 1939-40 which were 1st, 4th, 5th and 6th battalions, Gordon Highlanders.
London Gazette Supplement No 43278 Dated 20 March 1964 has HLI Maj TG Gilfillan succeding Maj ( Hon Lt Col) George Laird TD as tenure expired .
