I took these Saturday 15-08-2015 at St Peter and At Paul's church Lavenham, Suffolk. What a coincidence of that town's name.

Spring family money built the church and his Plaque is in the Spring Family Chantry.

Hi Spidge, Not sure if I have posted up this memorial before? can't see it. I was told about this one by a friend of the Aircrew Remembrance Society.
Walking over the wrong fields for a mile or so we met a woman of about 30 with her young daughter, asking for directions she informed us that her Grandfather was a tail gunner on Lancaster bombers based in Lincolnshire !! How's that for coincidence !!!

 

Another brave soul for you spidge. I took these at Earith, Cambridgeshire about 2001.

 

Saw this yesterday at Runnymede, but within the RAF section.

Lancaster LL 783 of 619 Sqn RAF took off from RAF Station Dunholme Lodge, Lincoln,
at 0055 hours on 7 June 1944 to attack Caen, France, and failed to return to base.

Following post war enquiries and investigations, the remains of FO Wyand, PO Lott and
Flt Sgt Williams were located and re-interred at Bayeaux British Cemetery, France, and
those of Flt Sgt Tucker buried at Tilly-Sur-Seules, France.
The remains of the remaining member of the crew including Flt Lt Roberts (RAAF)
could not be located and they have no known grave.
Citation:
DFC: PO Roberts of 619 Sqn was pilot of an aircraft detailed to attack Stuttgart one night
in March 1944. Whilst over the target area, the rear gunner Flt Sgt King (RAAF),
reported an enemy aircraft closing in to attack. PO Roberts took the necessary evading
action but the bomber was hit by the enemy’s bullets and sustained damage. Even so he
cleverly manoeuvred to a position from which the rear gunner was able to engage the
enemy. Following a well burst of fire from his guns, the enemy aircraft was seen to dive
towards the ground, out of control and with its engines on fire. PO Roberts then
completed his bombing run and afterwards flew the damaged aircraft to base. This officer
displayed commendable skill, courage and devotion to duty. The rear gunner at the time
was also awarded a DFM.

 

Requirements have been updated today. If anyone can assist with those that are outstanding, I would be most appreciative.

DaveB has found another Australian in the RAF killed on the first day of the German invasion of Norway in 1940. The Pilot of the Sunderland was RAAF. 9 of the ten crew were killed.

The "Lest-we-Forget" Cemetery in Goose Bay contains 32 CWGC burials, 28 of the war graves contain airmen, most of whom were killed when their aircraft crashed in this area.

Of these, 21 airmen belonged to the Royal Canadian Air Force, two to the Royal Air Force, one to the Royal Australian Air Force, three to the RAF Ferry Command and one to the RAF Transport Command. In the remaining war graves are buried four Canadian soldiers.
