That would simply invite imposters and false claims by people for medals which were never officially issued to them. Deserving forum veterans like Clive will be upset.

You've certainly got a point about 'liking' unpleasant news - one feels as if one wants to support the sentiment, but not 'like' it.

That said, I'm sceptical about negative reputation/dislikes. The risk is small in such an august community, but the function can lend itself to 'piling on': members see that a friend or respected member is having a disagreement and 'downvote' the opponent (often a newcomer) in large numbers in the spirit of support. Of course, this may well be warranted (I'm thinking here of neo-nazi, holocaust revisionist sludge), but there's always a danger that this presents to outsiders as insular groupthink and discourages new members and new posts, which are the lifeblood of any community, online or otherwise. From experience, a weight of 'likes'/'upvotes' doesn't engender the same resentment.

    Does that make sense?

In an earlier post on this thread i mentioned a primary school. teacher by the name of Miss Phillips.

I have just reminded myself that she once announced to the class "One day they will hang you Goldstein !"

With a bit of luck, and given my present age it is quite likely that her prediction is pretty unlikely !

As regards to the award of points, I completely concur that they are, dare I say it, pointless :)

I miss receiving negative feedback. It was always a useful confirmation that I had really managed to hit the spot....I rarely received any without intending to.:-P

    Trophies?
No... no Trophies here. Dunno what you're talking about.

On rep systems, I preferred the old VB one where you were forced to leave a little hidden message. It proved an excellent back channel and forced a human comment if negging, which caused some pause before doing so.
Arrse has a nice plugin that allows for multiple options including 'Show again braincell'.
Always fancied a 'You, Sir, are a buffoon.' button.
Can't work out who makes the plugin yet though.

At primary school I was awarded a certificate for swimming a breadth of the swimming pool ... it's far better than a fantasy gold medal or fantasy points anyway.

    Feedback
A brilliant, politically correct new word. Back in the day, we called that "criticism ".
Feedback means that while you are still being criticized but the implication is that, in doing so, they are actually doing you a favour.
