  1. No sweat Mark, I am used to it and don't mind at all. At least you did not use the feminine form Michelle or Michèle :D (no offense intended for the female members :salut:)

Fonts look fine to me, good for my old eyes. Thanks to those who have laboured long and hard on the move. - don't like American spell checkers though!

Right, all finished tweaking my setup now.
Thanks and congratulations to the techies and the Mods who have made this changeover relatively smooth.

When the dust has settled we'll have a more versatile interface that's more worthy of the fantastic resources the user-base delivers - the old place was decidedly creaky.

Probably a consequence of the new structure but 'old' Google search results aren't finding the old threads in their new locations. That will presumably sort itself out eventually but do we know if Google is scanning us as efficiently as it was before?

Looks like it, Google just found a couple of posts made by myself this morning.

    Looks to be rebuilding, idler.
SEO stuff only went in within the last 48hrs, so should start propagating things more strongly day by day.
Certainly Googlebots spotted quite frequently in the wild.

  8. Another remark regarding formatting/display of posts:

When posting verbatim transcriptions of documents, I try to keep the original presentation, including alignment of paragraphs etc.
It is also often needed to type tables or similar data to be displayed in columns.
For lack of a better tool, I used multiple spaces to obtain aligned columns. But with the new Software, these multiple spaces are still there, but are now displayed as a single one, thus turning clear tables/columns into unintelligible clusters of data.
Is it possible to retain the display of multiple blanks so as to keep the original format of old posts?

Another point: all the different fonts I selected to highlight different sources now seem to have been changed to the new default one.

Is there any way to display the text as typed by the poster, including in old posts? This should be possible, because when I click "edit" on old posts the original format as I typed it is still there. It's only the way it is displayed with the new software that is changed. I find it quite disheartening to see that tables and transcripts I took great care to make readable are now turned into obscure lumps of characters :(.

Sorry if this sounds unpleasant and if I do not join the apparent general enthusiasm for the new Software. I'm pleased to know that life is easier now for the forum owners and moderators, and I'm probably being unfair but so far I have failed to see any visible improvement for me as a user . But then I have to admit that I have not explored all the possibilities of the new Software, which hopefully will compensate what I am visibly the only one to consider drawbacks :D.

Have you tried the new search facility ?

I genuinely feel that this item alone is worth the hassle of the changeover.

What are these alerts? I clicked on it, and found I had been awarded a trophy for something good I evidently did on Monday pm:rolleyes:
    Somebody having a joke?
As far as I remember Monday pm I was recovering from an outing with family visitors.

    Hi Tricia
Alerts = notifications. (Check "Alert Preferences" on your profile page and (un)tick any default boxes which don't meet your requirements)

The standard software package came with "Trophy" awards for reaching set milestones... 1st post, and so on: the software automatically triggers an alert when each of these milestones has been reached. So it's prob catching up with whatever criteria you've qualified for on the ladder of forum greatness. :D
(For anyone who's interested in such things, lists can be found at Members> Notable Members> tabs for ... Most Messages/Points/Likes, etc, etc.)

It's possible that Trophy thing won't last long anyway. Other things on (the relatively short) snag list need addressing first.

  12. Hi Ron,

Yes, I did, and although it does respond faster (well, astoundingly fast to be honest), the choice of displaying as threads is lost, which I find regrettable, because it's not use to get lightning fast responses if one has to spend an eternity browsing through post after post of already known threads before getting to a yet unknown thread.

Maybe this could be easily fixed by adding a "View as threads" as there used to be in the old version?

Or quite possibly this option exists and I did not find it ?

They're a bit pointless as pretty much all longer-term posters achieve all available trophies in a pretty short time. Then, given that a large number of people have this maximum 'score' (113, I think), the first page of users ranked by total points is filled with identical scores (I don't know it which order they are then displayed), so everybody visible is tied first and everybody else is shunted off the list and not displayed - silly game.

Michel, did you not find when 'viewing results by thread' that absolute monster posts that took minutes to scroll through (rolls of honour or grave sites, for instance) made the function annoying?

Searching now brings up thread titles and individual posts (which is displayed faintly on the far right of the results) and you can skim over the type that is likely to be less helpful.

I fully appreciate that what works for one person can be an nuisance for another. Personally, I quickly got immensely frustrated with email notifications and thread subscriptions (and use them only to alert me to personal messages), but other people seem to rely on them.

    Trophies are silly.
I suppose forum software is sold to a wide church. There's always some bell or whistle that slightly puzzles me.

I may concoct a range of offensive foolish trophies with my fellow mods one evening over a few long distance drinks, or may just kill the whole system.

Unless I've got it wrong you can view the search results as threads viz the bottom of the search options:

    Order By:
    • Most Recent
    • Most Replies
    • Relevance
    Display results as threads
