Steve, I have unearthed another photo of my grandad sometime same place as the earlier one and I can clearly see he was a sargent which means definitely 24th lancers era as he was promoted after joining the 24th now I've just got to work out possibly where it was taken. If I can probably just be a best guess tho. The pic isn't very good as I just photographed it with my phone.

Still can't find out much regarding his side cap tho. Have tried googling the 24th lancers uniforms but not uncovered much about berets of caps

Any idea when he was promoted sergeant? That would help narrow the search. Could be a number of places including Bridlington, Crowborough, Milford on Sea, Chippenham........and others as well!

Hi Steve, he was promoted to sargent on the 6/12/1940 two days after being posted to the 24th lancers. It's funny on his records it says promoted to unpaid serjeant on the 6th Dec 1940 then awarded pay of rank on the 6th Dec 1940 as well, must have been one of the shortest acting sargent periods of the war. He was in Cannock when he was promoted. I think I'll read through none had lancers again as I can't remember if there was a large building mentioned but I'm thinking there may have been.

It says he was at boro-bridge, Whitby, Bridlington, there are four other places but I just can't work out what it actually says two of them I can't even make out a single letter and is there a place called Reldy bustle? That's the best I can work out. Don't I get a job at Bletchley Park.

This means he was with 24L from their formation which was December 1940! He must have been in the first draft!

    Reldy bustle = Keldy Castle

Going to be quite a search. Patience and persistence required.....

I do have a timeline of locations I started to write up a number of years ago. I will try to find it. Might save time for you etc.

Kedly castle sounds a bit better then redly bustle goes to show I've gotten so used to reading the aerial font I can no longer read handwriting. I'll,keeping searching I may surprise myself again. Thanks

Shaun. I've found the timeline I prepared in 1999! It uses old software and I'm having difficulty converting it into Word. The basic message is:
    December 1940 Cannock and Colton
    March 1941. Boroughbridge
    June 1941. Keldy Castle
    August 1941. Whitby
    April 1942. Mayfield
    May 1942. Crowborough
August 1942. Rottingdean and Upper Beeding
August 1942. 'Canada Farm' near Elvedon
September 1942. Chippenham Park near Newmarket
    June 1943. Bridlington
    February 1944. Chippenham Park
    April 1944. Milford on Sea
May 1944. Hursley Park near Southampton
    June 1944. Southampton
June 1944. 'The Great Adventure' begins.

I found out finally that the 24th lancers where originally issued with the side caps in the photograph and the in about 1941 they were replaced by the black berets. Which means the photo was possibly taken around 1940/41 right when the caps were being swapped over. Ref NHL amazing what more u learn from reading a book twice

    Hi guys,

I have some information regarding the Château de Boislondes, it actually belonged to my great grand parents. Their family name is Lemaigre de Mesnil. This château has been unfortunately destroyed during the war but my family still own some land. My great grandma has written a diary from the 6th to the 22th June 1944 in french. Let me know if you want to know more about it.

    Hello Again Artz,

Boislonde has a special meaning to me because my grandad was kia during a battle around the parc so I would be very interested in the diary thank you

    Hello Artz,
My father fought in the battle of the Parc de Boislonde on the 17th and 18th June 1944, with the 6th Duke of Wellington regmt.
He was greatly affected by his experiences during that battle, losing so many friends in just two days.
My wife and I are putting together a (not for profit) 'Video Documentary' about his life and that battle. We have found a translation of your great grand mothers diary in the Hubert Meyer book, but my wife, being a french speaker, would like to do a voice over in the original French... Is there a copy, or scan you could let me have of the original french wording of those dates? My wife believes it may have been mis-interpreted in part.
    Very grateful in advance,
    Neil

SDP - I believe there is a restiction on New Members to the extent that until they have made a certain number of posts [i.e. they are here to stay] before they can use the 'conversation' option.

Neil - I will send him one on your behalf and see what happens - his contact details may have changed as may his circumstances

    TD

I apologise to Artz as I have assumed they are 'he' and could very well be 'she' - so if they come back to read this thread please accept my apologises [acceptez s'il vous plaît mon s'excuse]

I've a feeling that another relative of the owners of the Chateau Boislonde also posted a couple of years or so ago - currently pressed for time so sorry can't help. Ramiles and Norton and 'Little Black Devil' might also be able to help.

    Good Morning,
I have messaged Artz as well to see if I can get a response.
from what I remember it took a little time to get a reply from her even tho her post was quite recent at the time.

However she did reply and forwarded me the messages in English.

I will also look back through some old posts to see if I can locate another member who may have posted about Boislonde.

Neil ostler, my grandfather also fought around Boislonde but unfortunately was kia there on the 17th June.
