The ship even carried out a search for three lifeboats that were unaccounted for until 03.30 hours on 11 October and then headed towards the South African coast at 9 knots. Note:-
Edward Alfred Dyer was further awarded a BEM(CD) when Boatswain on FORT CHILCOTIN - Torpedoed and sunk on 24 July 1943, having detached from Convoy JT.2 on 22 July 1943, in the South Atlantic, some 370 miles ESE of Bahia, in position 15 03S 032 35W, by U-172
    The London Gazette reports:-
The ship, sailing in convoy, was torpedoed. The engines were stopped by the explosion and the vessel began to sink. The crew had left the ship in boats and on rafts when a second torpedo hit the vessel causing her to sink almost immediately. The survivors were collected into two of the boats which were kept together until they were both picked up five days later after making a voyage of 300 miles.
Boatswain Dyer displayed outstanding courage and exemplary, behaviour throughout. After the ship had gone down, the submarine surfaced amongst the boats. The Boatswain was taken aboard the submarine for questioning. He was returned to his boat and thereafter, during the boat voyage, he did extremely good work, setting an excellent example to all.

Seedies says this is an Unknown Event but I am hazarding a guess that it was for the incident above and Captain Frederick Beales Parker and Frederick Donald Bonney’s Commendations were changed to OBE and MBE respectively but nothing is shown in LG to that fact!!
Another interesting thing is both LG and Seedies say Captain Peter Murray had a BEM. I have found two people named Peter Murray but one has MBE(MD) and the other BEM(CD)??
    30 December 1941 Gazette Issue 35399, Supplement 8, published 01 January 1942
MBE (MD) – 1942 New Year’s Honours – when Established Mate
    And

BEM (CD) – 1942 Birthday Honours - when Mate of a Steam Drifter according to LG – Seedies say HM Tug

Does anybody know when Captain Peter Murray died and where/if he is commemorated?
    Cheers
