DLI soldier captured by Germans May 1940

Hi Drew, I noticed this the other day wondered if this was the O.Henderson you were thinking about when the original question was first asked ? "Sgt ‘Ossie’ Oswald Henderson. Died 3 October 2014 Aged 96 years. He Served 10 Btn DLI" ?

No idea mate - I've just read through the whole thread and don't remember any of it. I can only think he gets a mention in the war diary, a DLI book or the Missing Men file as a witness

 

What an incredibly detailed diary for the 11DLI , The 4th Green Howards for this period is poor , a few lines for each day .
I do realise it was not their most pressing issue , but it was also a very eventful time with many serious losses and firefights not being mentioned at all .

Robert Henderson was born in July 1902, and resided at 6 New Hopper Street, Houghton Le Spring, County Durham. He enlisted in the 11th Battalion, Durham Light Infantry (T.A.) in March 1924, and was mobilised for service during the Second War, 25 August 1939. Henderson was taken prisoner of war near Arras, France, 22 May 1940. His M.I.9 debrief gives him as being interned at the following camps: Thorn, Poland, 7 June - 21 July 1940; Gdynia, Poland, 22 July 1940 - June 1941; Marienburg, East Prussia, June 1941 - September 1941; Thorn, Poland, September 1941 - September 1942 and Hohenfels, Bavaria, September 1942 - 19 April 1945.

After the war Henderson continued to serve in the Territorial Army, and served with ‘D’ Company, 8th Battalion, Durham Light Infantry, 1946 - 1957.

By following the information and advice on this thread alone must have pushed the estimated value up quite some way ?

I bet they love this forum. The chap who got a MM on my Massacre at Nieppe Forest thread, his medals came up for sale and all the background to the MM appeared to be a cut and paste from the thread. They wanted £6,000 for the group I think, I offered something like £5,000 but they rejected the offer. I would have loved that group.

He did indeed serve in the 10th according to his Obituary. I could really do with his service record.
