This book recounts the escape from Burma in 1942 of a group of British personnel in an escape organised by a Tea Planter named Gyles Mackrell a RFC veteran. Several members of the Oriental Mission figure in the story including Ritchie Gardiner, Bill Howe, and ERic McCrindle.

    Thanks Steven,

My brother alerted me to this book, he spotted some mentions of Longcloth personnel, one being Captain John Coleridge Fraser. I'll add this to my never ending book list.

Another worthwhile addition to the list is the new bio of Bill Slim which contains good detail on the command decisions re the Chindits

FindBookPrices came up with the following:

"No copies of this book were found in stock from
274 online book stores and marketplaces."

I will keep a look out though.

Just finished this and it is a good read. Having recently re-read "Defeat Into Victory" however one could clearly feel the strong influence this had had on the core of "Uncle Bill". For me personally the new book`s most interesting chapters were those dealing with the early and later parts of Bill Slim`s life.

BTW, a bit of a novice question perhaps, but did Montagu Stopford ever write an autobiography? I`ve been "googling" but to no avail. I notice his private diaries still exists but I can`t find anything autobiographical or even a biography.

    Regards,

    John

New addition "Fighting Mad" by Mike Calvert. Also finished "With the Gurkhas". It's a beautifully written book. Small part (some 40 pages) about author service during the war but great book for those interested in Gurkhas. Recommended.

Thank you for the recommendation for 'Gurkhas at War', I have collected some good information from it and have permission from the author to use anything I so wish on the website. :D

That's great news. So you succeeded to contact JP Cross then?

If you ever in your research came around some info about the battle of Sittang remember of me :)

Yes, quite easily when you consider he lives in Nepal. He was pleased to know someone is attempting to keep the 3/2 GR's story alive. I will always be on the look out for you, you need not worry about that. :)

It's only an ex-lib rebind but not a bad deal for a couple of quid; nearly put it back on the pile down thinking it would be WW1:

Friends Ambulance Unit: The Story of the F.A.U. in the Second World War 1939-1946 by A Tegla Davies

About 90 pages relate to their work in the Far East.

For a while I have been working on a translating of chaptor 4 from "De Japanse aanval op Java" for Warlord and well maybe it will do some of you good to come out of the Jungle for a moment. Hope you will enjoy reading as much as I enjoyed the work.

    Cheers
