    Summary:

On the 8th September 1943, Warwick BC300 crashed at 0135 hours at Dorset, UK, and all the crew were killed. After take off, a very flat turn resulted in a stall and the aircraft spun in from about 500 feet.

    Crew:

    RAAF 22930 PO Gordon, H P Captain (Pilot) †
    RAAF 409548 PO Holdsworth, F D (Observer) †
RAAF 421033 Flt Sgt R C Bellingham, (Wireless Air Gunner) †
RAAF 413133 Flt Sgt G W Murtagh, (Wireless Air Gunner) †
    RAF Cpl J B Kieran, †

The four RAAF members are buried in the Christchurch Cemetery, Hampshire, UK.

Corporal Kiernan is buried in the Liverpool (West Derby) Cemetery.

A Court of Inquiry into the accident stated : “ The aircraft had arrived at 30 ADU Hurn at about 1200 hours on the 7th September from RAF Station Bircham Newton. It was enroute to North Africa, and it took off from RAF Station Hurn airfield at 0131hours on 8th September, loaded approx 600 lbs under Max take off load and about 200 lbs below Max landing load. The weather and visibility was good.

Evidence shows that the aircraft took off in the normal manner and immediately turned to starboard and flew for a short distance in an erratic manner. Upon reaching a height of 6/800 feet it fell out of control and burst into flames from impact with the ground.

Flt Sgt Gordon was a very steady pilot, and for the last nine months had flown Hudson,
Wellington and Warwick aircraft. It must have been impressed on him throughout his
training that to attempt turns in a heavy aircraft immediately after take off was highly
dangerous especially at night from a strange airfield.
In view of the evidence that a turn starboard was made immediately after takeoff it is
considered that the turn was not intended by the Pilot. The manoeuvres of the aircraft
during the short flight seemed to indicate that the Pilot was unable to control it
    properly.”.

In was the opinion of the Court that “the accident was not caused as a result of
airmanship or by carelessness on the part of PO Gordon. The damage to the aircraft was
total and complete and from a careful examination of the wreckage no conclusion could
be known as to why the aircraft fell out of control.”

    Aircraft Type: Mosquito
    Serial number: HX805
    Radio call sign:
Unit: No. 301 Ferry Training Unit RAF

    Summary:

On the 9th September 1943, Mosquito HX805 crashed at Swindon, Wiltshire, and the
    Pilot was killed.

    Crew:

    RAAF 413377 Flt Sgt L B Haberecht, (Pilot) †
RAF Flt Sgt Alfred Dutton (Staff Wireless / Air Gunner)

Flt Sgt Haberecht is buried in the Bath (Haycombe) Cemetery, UK.

In a later statement the Staff WAG said : “I was detailed to carry out a wireless test on
Mosquito HX805. At approx 1017 hours on 9th Sept 1943, I entered the aircraft with the
pilot Flt Sgt Haberecht, who started the engines up and without warming them up, taxied
to the end of the runway, and took straight off at approx 1030. We climbed to 5,000 feet
and dived downward over the WAAF site at Compton Bassett, clearing the site by about
150 feet. We then climbed to 8,000 feet and dived once more over the site clearing it by
about 2/300 feet. We then climbed to 20,000 feet, and cruised around while I tested the
wireless. At about 1055, the Pilot decided to return to base, and I then reeled in my
trailing aerial. The Pilot then instructed me to secure my safety harness as he was going
to loop the aircraft. We commenced a shallow dive, IAS 160mph. At 15,000 feet I was
secured, and the Pilot put the aircraft in a 10 degree dive which we maintained for 20
seconds., and the Pilot commenced easing the stick back gently, when the starboard wing
shuddered violently. The Pilot released his safety harness and jettisoned the door. The
aircraft commenced a flat spin and shuddered. The aircraft then went into a vertical spin.
The Pilot picked up my chute pack and pushed it against my chest while I attempted to
clip it on. He told me to hurry. At about 2,000 feet having secured one side of my pack
the Pilot pushed me out of the door backwards.“
An Inquiry into the accident concluded : “The aircraft spun in from 15,000 feet out of
control and breaking up during descent to burst into flames on impact. The Pilot was on
duty at the time and in no way to blame for the crash. He deserves commendation for
remaining with the aircraft to help his wireless operator to get out of the aircraft at the
    cost of his own life.”

Summary of War Service and loss details:
Associated with the service of Flight Sergeant 413377 Leonard Burtham Haberecht who was born on 28 June 1922 in Henty, NSW. At the outbreak of the Second World War, he had begun a traineeship as an electrical technician. He enlisted in the RAAF reserve in January 1941 and was called up for full time duty at the age of 19 on 17 August 1941 at Number 2 Recruit Centre, Sydney. He was found suitable for flight training and was sent to 2 Initial Training School, Bradfield with the rank of aircraftsman the same day. Haberecht passed this initial course in October and in November he was posted to 8 Elementary Flying Training School at Narrandera and promoted to leading aircraftman. After completing this course in January 1942, he was posted to 2 Service Flying Training School (SFTS) at Wagga Wagga in early March and 7 SFTS later that month. Haberecht was given his pilot's wings and promoted temporary sergeant on 26 June 1942.

He married Josephine Babette Hughes in Sydney on 25 July, while he was waiting to embark for overseas service. He embarked from Sydney on 23 August in HMT Westernland. He disembarked in Capetown on 5 October and spent two weeks at 1 Flying Training Command at Poolsmere. He embarked for England on 19 October in HMT 'Highland Brigade' arriving on 18 November. Haberecht was promoted to temporary flight sergeant on Christmas Day 1942. He was posted to 12 Pilot Advanced Flying Unit on 9 February 1943 where he began flying Mosquito aircraft. In April, Haberecht began operational flying with 51 Operational Training Unit (OTU) and in May moved to 60 OTU.

In July he moved again to 301 Ferry Training Unit. He flew several variants of Blenheim, Halifax and Wellington bombers to different airfields during the next month and a half. In early September, he returned to Mosquitoes. He was assigned to a Mosquito MKVI, number 805 and between September 4 and 8 flew the aircraft with his Wireless Operator Sergeant Mooney to test the fuel systems, engines and communications. On September 9, Haberecht took a new wireless operator Flight Sergeant Alfred Dutton on his first flight in a Mosquito. Haberecht took off at 1030 and climbed to 5000 feet before diving down to 150 feet passing over the WAAF billets. He climbed to 8000 feet and repeated his run over the WAAF billets at 200 feet. Haberecht then took his aircraft to 20000 feet, maintaining that height so Dutton could test his communications gear.

Haberecht tested the engines and once the communications tests had been completed, told Dutton to strap in as he was going to loop the Mosquito. At 1055, Haberecht put the Mosquito into a shallow dive flying at 160 miles per hour. When the aircraft passed through 15000 feet, Haberecht put his Mosquito into a 10 degree dive for 20 seconds. When he pulled back on the control column, the starboard wing shuddered violently, pulling the mosquito into a flat spin. Acting quickly, Haberecht took off his seat harness and opened the escape hatch before assisting Dutton into his parachute harness. As the parachute was fitted, the Mosquito went into a vertical dive. At just under 2000 feet, Haberecht managed against massive forces to push Dutton out of the Mosquito. At this stage, the aircraft had started to break up. A portion of the port main plane and the port engine detached, the engine smashing through the tailplane. The Mosquito crashed onto Gallows Hill, Swindon killing Haberecht seconds later. Flight Sergeant Haberecht was buried with full military honours on the morning of 14 September at Wycombe Cemetery near Bath.

The throttles were opened and the aircraft began to climb until without any hint of
trouble, it dived into a house less that a mile south west of the airfield. It was thought
likely that the flaps were raised in error for the undercarriage. All the crew were killed.

completed his tasks quietly and methodically. He has attacked Tobruk on 18 occasions.
On 30th July 1942, he attacked shipping off the jetties which caused an explosion and fire.
On the night of 2nd August, in spite of cloud over the harbour, he finally obtained a bead
on a ship after several attempts. The cloud obscured the results. On 22nd August 1942, he
started a fire in the battle area, and again on 28th August. On 24th September 1942, he
made four runs on LG 102 and his bombs burst among aircraft. This NCO has continued
to operate longer than a normal tour with keenness and has set a fine example to other
NCO’s in the Squadron.” (London Gazette 16/1/1942)

On the night of 10/11th September 1942, Wellington DV703 took off from Wing, armed
with 4 x 500lb of bombs, and detailed to attack Dusseldorf, Germany. Nothing was heard

The aircraft was attacked from below by a night fighter, whose canon shells severed
petrol and oil pipes and set alight to the fuselage. Communication between the crew was
impossible as the blaze immediately destroyed the intercom system. WO Hedley
managed to speak to the skipper who told him to bale out. He did so, though lost
consciousness in the process. Out of control, The aircraft hit the ground at around 0015
hours some 500 metres south west of Overhetfeld, on the north west side of
Wiederkruchten. Four of the crew were killed and WO Hedley was a POW.

    RAAF B-24J Liberator,
    A72-313, ex USAAF No. #44-28125
    99 Squadron RAAF

    Summary:

The aircraft crashed near Amberley in Queensland mid afternoon on 14 September 1945. Five crew members were killed. The cause of the crash was unknown.

Flight Lieutenant G.A. Hendy was in A72-313 supervising the pilot and co-pilot on a pilot check-flight.

The pilot and co-pilot had not flown a Liberator for quite some time.

The Liberator lifted off earlier than the normal take-off distance. Not long after take-off No. 2 propeller 'ran away' and was subsequently feathered for a short time before it was restarted. As this was happening the aircraft yawed dramatically to the right. The undercarriage was retracted and then lowered again and then raised again as the B-24 circled around Amberley airfield slowly losing height.

It was dangerously low when it was 8 kilometres from the runway. Its undercarriage and flaps were raised as it turned to starboard in a shallow descent. Then all the engines suddenly stopped, and the nose dived down by about 70 degrees and crashed amongst the trees at 3:43pm.

It caught fire killing all five crew on board.
