    Hi all,

I have just come into possession of The Essex Regiment 1929-1950 by Colonel T.A. Martin.

The book covers Regimental history from Inter-war/WW2/Post-war periods with chapters on most battalions (including Home Defence). Also included are maps, photographs, lists of honours and awards, and above all a Roll of Honour.

If anyone would like any information regarding The Essex, please do not hesitate to send me a message or reply in this thread and I will gladly search the book.

    Regards,

    Nipper

    Nipper,

I don't suppose there is a section on the over-running of the box at deir el Shein on 1 July 1942? I believe that this involved the 2/5 Essex regt.

    Nipper,

Thanks for that - I'll have to try and get it through an inter-library loan. Is the narrative basically a repeat of a war diary entry, or do you think it is based more on personal interviews during the writing of the book?

    Cheers

    Hi Nipper, thanks for that.
I am working my way through transcribing parts of 'Warmen Courageous' the story of Essex Home Guard (starting with my local Btn, Romford) but with my typing it is a bit slow!
I would be interested to see what the official history says. 14 pages is a lot to scan but if you have the time.....

    Cheers, Mike

It was no problem at all Tom, glad I could help. I would say the narrative is similar to a war diary, but I had some spare time the other night so I scanned the whole chapter for you. I hope the information can be of some use - sorry for the wonky pages, the book is quite large and old, it gets a bit tricky to scan sometimes.

    Regards,

    Nipper

    Hi Mike,

As I was mentioning to Tom, I had some spare time the other night so I went through the pages and scanned them. The Home Guard chapter was an interesting read, particularly the 3rd paragraph down on page 548 regarding the pub owner and his weed killer. Quite the humorous yet poignant reminder of what lengths people were prepared to go in the event of an invasion.

Hope it can be of some use,

    Regards,
    Nipper

(Have noticed that the author of "Warmen Courageous" Peter Finch, is the same author who wrote the Home Guard chapter for this book. I will upload the scans nonetheless, incase the information differs in any way and for other forum users who might find it helpful)

    Hi At Home Dad,

The only officer I could find is a Captain S.E. Collier of "D" Company the 7th (Home Defence) Battalion, Essex Regiment. He is mentioned by name in a chapter called "The 7th and 30th (Home Defence) Battalions, The Essex Regiment". The chapter covers the two Battalion's history from their reformation from No. 8 Group N.D.C to their disbandment in 1942.

I have yet to find a mention of the of the other names you posted, I will have a more thorough read and see what I can find.

    Regards,

    Nipper

I'll do a search of ABE books and see if i can get a copy of this book. Not much online about the Essex Regiment. How many Bn's were raised during the war ? I found something on the BBC site about 19th Bn Essex Regt ? Was there a 19th ? Besides the Home Guard Bn's I was only aware of the 1st, 2nd, 1/4, 2/4, 1/5 and 2/5.

The Essex are my local Regiment, i live just down the road from the Regimental chapel at Warley. My Father served in 4/5 Essex before it became the East Anglian and then Royal Anglian Regiment. I served in C Essex Company of 1 Royal Anglian.

    Regards

    Rich
