    Aircraft Type: Blenheim
    Serial number: Z7274

    Unit: 139 SQN RAF

    Summary:

On 2nd September 1941 a flight of six Blenheims from No. 139 (Jamaica) Squadron left
from the airfield at Manston in Kent at 10:23am for a daylight anti-shipping operation to
    Blankenberghe & Ostend.

    Crew:

40064 S/Ldr Kevin Harrold Walsh RAF (Pilot) (Of Australia)
560790 F/Sgt Alfred George Hole RAF (Navigator)
1017894 Sgt George Henry Brook RAF (Wireless Op/Gunner

S/Ldr Kevin Walsh flying in the lead Blenheim with Hurricane bombers also comprising the striking force and a wing
consisting of Nos. 242, 452 and 485 Squadrons escorted them. Their mission was to sweep
from Dunkirk to Ostend attacking Shipping. Ship and shore anti-aircraft defenses were
extremely active at the Port of Ostend on the approach the lead Blenheim managed to
score a direct hit on a Merchant Vessel. Another Blenheim also hit the Merchant Vessel
sinking it. Kevin Walsh in the lead Blenheim was shot down under heavy flak, the body of
S/Ldr Walsh washed up to shore on the 14th of September while the body of his navigator
F/Sgt Alfred George Hole had been recovered from the sea and later buried in England.
Sadly the body of Wireless Operator/ Gunner Sergeant George Henry Brook was never
recovered. The only other score for the mission was a small 5,000 Tonne anti-aircraft "flak
ship". As the formation withdrew Willis saw one Blenheim returning at sea level without
escort and was then shot down by two Messerschmidts

Wellington Z8529 took off from RAF Binbrook at 2252 hours on the night of 2/3rd
September 1942 to bomb Karlsruhe, Germany. Nothing was heard from the aircraft after

RAF Sgt J J Foley, (Rear Gunner)

Flt Sgt Monckton and Sgt Logan were killed in the crash and the other three crew
members were POW’s. Those killed are buried in the Marissel French National
Cemetery, Locality Oise, France. Marissel is in the eastern suburb of Beauvais, a
cathedral town between Rouen and Compiegne. The Cemetery known locally as the
“Cimetiere Militaire National de Beauvais-Marissel’, is not actually in Marissel. It is
located approx 1km north of Beauvais town centre on the Rue d’Amiens (N1).
In a POW report Flt Sgt Alt stated “The aircraft was returning from Karlsruhe, height
9000 feet, 10 miles from the French coast, when it was attacked by a JU88 Effective
evasion action was taken during which the height was reduced to 5000 feet. An enemy
aircraft was sighted on the starboard side and slightly above, so the height was dropped to
500 feet. The port propeller hit a tree and the port motor became U/S. The propeller was
feathered and an attempt made to climb on one engine. This failed owing to an increase
in the height of the ground and we crashed into the brow of a hill. Both Monckton and
Logan were killed by the impact, and Holland suffered a fractured collar bone. Both
Foley and self were uninjured. The aircraft crashed in the vicinity of St Juste, France.
I was picked up 6 days later by the Germans.”

Probably the first Australian casualties after the declaration of war on 3 September 1939 were serving members of the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF). A pilot and his observer were killed in a flying accident while ferrying a Wirraway to Darwin, where 12 Squadron RAAF was based for coastal patrol missions.

[Operations Record Book of 12 (General Purpose) Squadron RAAF. AWM64 Item 1/74]

The Anson and five Wirraways arrived at DARWIN at 10.30 hours from Daly Waters. Unfortunately the arrival of the Wirraways was marred by a fatal accident. Flying Officer AV Dolphin of Recruit Training Depot, Laverton who was ferrying Wirraway A20-5, stalled and crashed onto aerodrome and both he pilot and observer, No. 1 Corporal JOHNSON, H W - Air Observer, No. 12 Squadron were killed. Three air searches were carried out.

    Summary:

Halifax W7674 was one of a formation of aircraft that set out on 6th September 1942 to
bomb Heraklion drome, Crete. W7674 leading a formation of 3 aircraft made a run over
the target and bombed in a shallow dive pulling out at 7000 feet. The starboard outer
engine was hit presumably by light flak at the end of the run and petrol was seen
streaming away from it. The Pilot turned the aircraft southward and one was seen to bale
out at 6000 feet. Soon after other chutes were seen to open as the aircraft broke up in mid
air.and crashed south east of Kastelli Pediada. Two members of the crew were safe and
    others were POW’s.
The safe crew members later confirmed that only one other member of the crew had
baled out and he was a POW, and that the Captain, Flt Sgt Carson and one other crew
member were found dead in the aircraft.

Richard Carew Reynell was born in Reynella, South Australia on January 9th 1912 and was educated at St Peter's, Adelaide. He went to England in 1929 and passed the Oxford University entrance examination to read Agriculture at Balliol College.

Reynell joined the University Air Squadron and he was commissioned in the RAFO in March 1931. He relinquished this on being granted a short service commission in the RAF in September 1931. On the 28th Reynell was posted to 5 FTS, Sealand and with training completed he joined 43 Squadron at Tangmere on March 8th 1932. He flew one of three Furies of the squadron, which performed at the International Air Meeting at Brussels on June 11th 1933. Reynell went to the Station Flight at Duxford on December 6th 1934 and then joined the instructing staff at 8 FTS, Montrose on May 4th 1936. He went on to the RAFO on January 15th 1937. After a visit to Australia Reynell returned to Britain and became a test pilot at Hawker's.

At the outbreak of war, Reynell remained on the RAFO but was seconded to Hawkers to continue his test pilot duties. On August 26th 1940 he was attached to 43 Squadron at Tangmere, for operational experience. Reynell claimed a Me109 destroyed on September 2nd.

Reynell was shot down on the 7th September in combat with Me109’s over South London. He baled out, wounded, but his parachute failed to open and he fell dead near Blackheath, his Hurricane V7257 crashing nearby.

He was 28 and left a wife and baby son.

Reynell is buried in Brookwood Cemetery, Surrey.

    Summary:

On 8th September 1942, Hudson V8987 at 1745 hours struck the top of a hill and crashed
one mile east of St Eval, Cornwall owing to bad weather. All on board were killed.

All the crew are buried in the St Columb Major Cemetery, UK. The cemetery was used
during WW2 by RAF Station St Eval which was abut 7kms away.
A report into the Flying Accident stated : “ Bad weather conditions developed during an
operational night patrol and instructions were given to Sgt Farrrer by Flying Control to
proceed to Chivenor where landing conditions were better. These instructions were
acknowledged but the Pilot announced his intentions to land at St Eval and in doing so
the aircraft struck the top of a hill in the vicinity.
The RAF Station Commander at St Eval stated : “ I was present in Flying Control while
this aircraft was in difficulty. Instructions were given to the Pilot of the aircraft to
