I have a copy of my father in laws log book from stalag luft 111.

I have sketches of Block 69 Room 5 so I am assuming this is where he was.

The sketch book also contains 27 face sketches of the following people, if anyone has any information on any of these people i would love to hear from you.

Each sketch gives the information on where when shot down etc, if I can help anyone with this info let me know

    Hi Joy,

This is a fascinating post, and great news for me.

My late father (S/L Peter Stevens MC) was a resident in Room 14 of Block 69 for about 18 months, and he would have known many of the people listed.

Two names jumped out at me: Eddie Asselin, a wild Canadian most famous for his lengthy poker games and his incredible tunnel under the latrine at Oflag XXI B (Schubin), from which 35 POWs escaped (including my Dad); and Tex Ash, co-author of 'Under The Wire', a great book you should read (and another escaper from the latrine tunnel). Tex is still alive and living in London, but in poor health. I'm proud to call him a good friend and one of my heroes.

By the way, are any of the drawings signed "Slack"? Tom Slack was a Spitfire pilot and a roommate of Dad's in 14. Tom did a couple of great drawings of my Dad, which I have previously posted in other threads.

    Best regards,

    Marc

My father was in Room 3 Block 22. From his P.O.W. Log book, these are his room mates.

    Hi,

Thanks to you both for your replies

All the sketches in the log are drawn by Ft Lt Eric W Applebee DFM, who was shot down in Italy in Aug 1941 we only know that he was in Gavi Campo 5 until the capitulation of Italy he then went to Stalag Luft 111.

But the last finished sketch is dated 12/02/45 Luckenwalde.

Marc is there anyway you can get the sketch of Tex Ash to him or his relatives

I am reluctant to post them as the log book does not belong to me but I would be quite happy to email a copy to any relatives.

I would love to know more about all the men in the sketches.

My interest is geneology but I would like to record anything I can for future generations.

    Thanks for your help

    Dear Joy,

    Thank you for your post.

I did some research a little while ago on Stalag Luft III and it was nice to see your post.

The person I was researching is F/L WA Staniland Hank. He is my Great Uncle. I would be grateful for more information please. My father would certainly be interested.

Feel free to PM me. I look forward to hearing from you.

    Regards Daisy

    Hi Joy,

Yes, I would be very pleased to pass a sketch along to Tex Ash in London. Please send it to me as a private message, and it will be my great pleasure to send it to him.

For his genealogy, I can only refer you to his book 'Under The Wire'. It's a good one!

    All the best,

    Marc

    Joy,

I forgot to mention that Eddie Asselin's daughter has been seen on this board, and I'm very sure that she'd be ecstatic to receive the sketch of her dad. I can't remember her alias, so just search for "Asselin" in this thread, and I'm sure you'll find her.

Eddie is also mentioned extensively in 'Under The Wire'. He was quite the character, apparently.

    hi daisy,

I don't seem to be able to PM you, the website just keeps asking for login details. Can you try and PM me.

Also can't search for Asselin again constantly asking me for login details, maybe my computer is setup wrong

Some forums are set up so you do not have the PM privilege until you have made 5 posts. Perhaps that's the case here so as you now have 6 posts, maybe try again.

    Hi Joy,

My wife is the grand daughter of S/Ldr Lemon Cheese. His name was Peter Coplestone Lemon and he flew Wellingtons. He was awarded the DFC (London Gazette 8.10.40) and the DSO (London Gazette 4.8.42). He was shot down on the night of 25th/26th July 1942, the target was Duisburg. He was shot down by night fighters over Holland. He survived Stalag Luft III and the Sagen death march and continued his RAF career after the war finishing as a Wing Commander. We have a file of his entire career, his miniture medals and his flying jacket. Obviously my wife is very interested in the sketch of her Grandfather. Would it be possible to get a copy of it? It would be very much appreciated. If you would like more information on Peter please let me know.

    Regards

    "Lemoncheese"

Hello - I am a family researcher for The Heligoland39 Project - we are interested in making contact with families of the RAF service men that took part in The Battle Of Heligoland Bight on 18 December 1939. We held a remembrance event for these men on 18 Dec 2018 in Ely Cathedral to mark the beginning of the 80th Anniversary of the Heligoland event and over 80 relatives attended. We are holding a further commemoration event 18 Dec 2019 at the Runnymede Memorial in Surrey. S/Ldr Lemon took part in this battle and was in the only plane in 37 Sqdn that made it back to RAF Feltwell that night.
It would be good to make contact with you. For details of our project you can visit our website www.heligoland39.org
