i recon the best anti tank guns would have to be the 88mm gun man that is good i can knock up to 5 tanks with that the 6prd is also a good anti tank gun the pack40 was also a good gun same with the 76mm gun.

The Airborne 6 pounder's a personal favourite, (rare gun, even Fort Nelson's is on loan from a film company) the later 6 with the muzzle brake and the right ammunition was a quality item, you might not penetrate that king tiger's front plate but there was a good chance of shattering some vulnerable part or jamming a turret, maybe even a good solid side hit. Brave men to fight with one of those eh monty?
I suppose the Panzer Faust, Panzer Schreck and to a certain point the PIAT had their moments of victory as anti-tank weapons.
I suppose the Panzer Faust, Panzer Schreck and to a certain point the PIAT had their moments of victory as anti-tank weapons. Can't say fairer than that, but before we credit the Panzerschreck we ought to give a big hand to the machine it was copied from (In the usual overcomplicated 88mm sort of way).. M1 Bazooka!
I'm with Gromney & Spidge (sounds like a dodgy law firm!) and go for the 88 and the 17 Pounder. As for the Panzerschreck, Panzerfaust and the PIAT, the call was for anti-tank 'guns'. The Panzerschreck & Panzerfaust are rocket systems and the PIAT is a grenade launcher. Just getting picky in my old age. ^_^
Guns, guns yes! I did see that but as you were all doing so well with the 88mm and the 17lb thought I'd send in a rocket. M1 Bazooka sorry for missing you out. Strange that no mention is made of Russian anti-tank guns they must've had one or two.
They had some blindingly good ones chap, 76.2mm(???) in particular. Rechambered and used in large numbers by the Germans and mounted as a standard production item on later Marder II's.
For me there is only one..It stands alone on a different class from anything else. For there is no other gun that can approach this gun. High velocity, supreme accuracy, deadly tank killer. It does stand alone, it is the 88. I may add that it is still held in awe by the Veterans. It may also have been responsible for terminating my war? Sapper
Just a thought. If the Germans used an anti-aircraft gun for anti-tank work why didn't we do the same? I suppose there's a simple answer. Maybe somebody knows.
My father was a WOII armourer in the RAOC, then the REME, during the war specialising in anti-aircraft artillery. I asked him this same question many years ago and he was adamant that the 3.7" gun was just as effective as the 88mm. The issue, as described by him, was that the mount for the gun could not take the strain from firing in an anti tank role for sustained periods whereas, the mount of the 88mm on the FlaK 18 was better able to withstand those strains. As to why the MOD didn't look to modify or have a new mount designed, perhaps like the 88mm PaK43/41, we might look at the context at the time when resources were limited. Defeating an aerial bombing onslaught might be deemed to have been the priority. Promises of the future 17 pdr might also have had an impact on the decision making.
