Major WALTER FRANCIS DAVID LONG 50864, 5th Bn., Coldstream Guards who died age 33 on 23 September 1944
2nd Viscount Long of Wraxall. Son of Brigadier General Walter Long, C.M.G., D.S.O., Royal Scots Greys, killed in action in France, 28th January, 1917, and of the Hon. Mrs. Sibell Long, of Ardington, Wantage, Berkshire; husband of the Viscountess (Frances Laura) Long.
Remembered with honour UDEN WAR CEMETERY

From A Distant Drum, Pereira, pg 106:
We “moved on” and, among other things, parted with Michael Willougby’s company, No. 2, which was sent to guard a town called OSS. “Among other things” is less than justice, however, as OSS was a place of fable and renown with a food dump of prodigious size that supplied all of XXX Corps for many days, and as at that time we couldn’t supply ourselves its importance can hardly be exaggerated.

It was too late to clear the centre line that night, but in the morning [23] we set out early to discover how the land lay and operations began soon after ten o’clock, with ourselves advancing towards VOKEL to the east of the centre line and the GRENADIERS going down the main road towards VECHEL, where the 50th Division were, just south of the cut. Since the heavy casualties we had on the ALBERT CANAL we were still without reinforcements and the Battalion mustered only three weak companies, which with Michael’s back at OSS, left us with only two for the attack, so while one squadron went down the road No. 1 Company under DAVID LONG, mounted on another squadron, followed behind ready to put in an attack as soon as we bumped any trouble, which left another company/squadron group still in hand.

We met trouble where we had expected to, just outside VOKEL, and soon after midday, while the leading squadron engaged the enemy down the road, DAVID and another squadron attacked through the woods to the right of it; two hours later we were in possession of the village. It was typical of so many of the actions of that kind that we fought during the war. On our side one company and two squadrons were involved; holding VOKEL there were probably about two companies of German infantry, not so well armed but with the advantages that always lie with the defence. It was not a very spectacular or decisive attack, but it had to be done, and it was - exactly according to plan. And because so often these things are merely recorded as “a most successful little attack,” it should be remembered in capital letters that IT ALWAYS COSTS LIVES, and the company suffered casualties that included DAVID LONG killed and BASIL WHITEHORN, the only other officer left in the company, who was wounded. C.S.M. FARNHILL, who took over during the attack, was awarded a D.C.M.

See 5 Bn CG thread post #21 for FARNHILL’S DCM citation:

Captain Sir FRANCIS HENRY RIVERS ASTLEY-CORBETT 132224, 2nd Bn., Scots Guards who died age 27 on 10 September 1943
5th Bart. Son of Major John Dugdale Pelham Astley-Corbett and of Marcia Georgina Ruth Astley-Corbett (nee Pitt Rivers), of Mayfair, London.
Remembered with honour SALERNO WAR CEMETERY
    Grave Ref: II. A. 20.

From The Scots Guards, Erskine, Pg 170:
    [*'Tobacco Factory area, Battipaglia']
As the attack went in, Battalion Headquarters, behind the houses at the cross-roads, came under fire from an 88-mm. gun which apparently had remained hidden between Left Flank and Right Flank when they turned off the road to the Tobacco Factory. Arrangements were being made to deal with this gun when a shell burst among the officers assembled there. The Brigade Commander and the Commanding Officer were astonishingly unhurt, though the latter was knocked down, but the Adjutant, CAPTAIN SIR HENRY ASTLEY-CORBETTT, was killed and Major Crichton-Stuart seriously, and his second-in-command, Captain M.N. Romer, slightly, wounded.
    ...

*It should be pointed out that, although the buildings were marked on the map as Tabacchificio, what everyone called the "Battipaglia Tobacco Factory"
1 was not at Battipaglia, but at Bellizzi
2 never contained tobacco, which was all sent up to genuine tobacco factories at Pontecagnano and Battipaglia proper, and
3 was not a factory but a storage depot, with a canning plant attached, where the main crop dealt with was tomatoes.

    42445 The Hon. Lieutenant John Patrick BOWES-LYON, 2 Scots Guards: 18/09/1941 - 19/09/1941

    CWGC :: Casualty Details
Lieutenant The Hon. JOHN PATRICK BOWES-LYON 42445, 2nd Bn., Scots Guards
    who died age 31 between 18 September 1941 and 19 September 1941
Master of Glamis. Son of Patrick Bowes-Lyon, 15th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne, and of Lady Dorothy Beatrice Godolphin Osborne, of Glamis Castle, Angus.
Cousin of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
Remembered with honour HALFAYA SOLLUM WAR CEMETERY
    Grave/Memorial Ref: 1. F. 2.

From The Scots Guards, Erskine, pg 84-5, Africa 1941:
By daylight on the 15th the Battalion was back in new positions near Sidi Barrani, but in the course of the morning it became apparent that the enemy forces on the Escarpment had been withdrawn, and by midnight the Battalion was back in its previous positions. The possible thrust had proved to be but a reconnaissance in force and our withdrawal had been so rapid and well timed that the reconnaissance had made no further contact.

Three nights later on the 18th a sad loss was suffered when Lieutenant The Hon. J.P. BOWES-LYON, a nephew of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, was killed while charging an enemy sangar with grenades while on patrol.

Captain PATRICK HENRY STANLEY DANVERS BUTLER 200106, 1st Bn., Scots Guards who died on 28 February 1944
Son of Henry Cavendish Butler, eighth Earl of Lanesborough, and of Grace Lilian Butler (nee Abdy) Countess of Lanesborough, of Loughborough, Leicestershire.
Remembered with honour BEACH HEAD WAR CEMETERY, ANZIO
    Grave Ref: V. H. 2

From The Scots Guards, Erskine, pg 226, Italy:1944
    [Anzio Beach-head]
Battalion Headquarters was in an almost oval glade with the officers' tents at one end, the tents of the Commanding Officer and Major McBarnett being sited to end near two outstandingly tall trees. At about five o'clock the Commanding Officer [Lt-Colonel D.S. Wedderburn, DSO] was talking outside his tent to Major Weir, when a shell came over and landed outside the clearing and in the direction of the road. A few seconds later Major McBarnet appeared with the news that this shell had severely wounded Lieutenant J.W. Stuart-Menteth. On hearing this Captain Ross left his tent and started towards the Commanding Officer. At the same time Lieutenants BUTLER and L.E. Widderson approached the group to announce their success in finding a NAAFI. At that moment two shells landed in the tent area, and, it is thought, hit the tall trees, which turned them into air bursts. Major McBarnet, Major Weir, Lieutenant BUTLER, Lieutenant Widderson, and Corporal Wood, the Commanding Officer's driver, were all killed, The Commanding Officer, who had just gone back into his tent, received critical injuries, and Captain Ross and his driver and RQMS Watts were also wounded.

For a time hopes held out that the Commanding Officer might recover. But on the following evening he grew worse, and shortly after midnight, in the midst of a heavy air-raid, he died.

Lieutenant [The Hon.] ALISTAIR ROBERT HERVEY ERSKINE M C 247095, 2nd Bn., Scots Guards who died age 22 on 19 April 1945

From The Scots Guards, pg 452, 2nd Bn, Germany:1945:
    [Visselhoevede]

The G Company platoon has been less fortunate; a burst of Spandau fire from a projecting window, when they were in position of comparative safety between a tank and a wall, hit Lieutenant ERSKINE and every member of his Platoon Headquarters, Lieutenant ERSKINE died while being taken to the rear in an ambulance later in the day. He had earned the reputation of being "the best soldier in the Battalion", and "soldiering came naturally to him ... he could concern himself therefore with the embellishments while we were struggling with the fundamentals."

Vestey was serving with 1st Bn, Scots Guards

From Scots Guards, Erskine, pg 244, Italy: 1944; 1st Bn, Over the Hills to Florence:
    [Point 846, La Foce]

Moreover, while the Left Flank were consolidating their position on the plateau they were subjected to constant and heavy mortar fire, during which the Battalion suffered a grievious blow. The bombs killed the Commanding Officer, Lieutenant-Colonel Taylor, and Captain the Hon. W. H. VESTEY, who was commanding Left Flank in the place of Major Harvey; in addition Lieutenant D. J. Forbes and sixteen men were wounded that day, and two Guardsmen killed.

The death of Colonel Taylor was a sad even, more especially for those who had served under him in the Second Battalion and come with him to the First.
