How did SNAFU not make this esteemed list? I read enough ROs to make it seem like it needed neither inclusion nor explanation.
Great stuff Ken. I've merged 2 abbreviations threads together to concentrate things. If anyone spots another thread that would fit in with this then do give myself, Gott, Paul, or Owen a shout and we'll merge them in as well.
Jason If I can assist with Royal Artillery Abbreviations, please feel free to ask, I promise not to try and sell you a copy of my book! Phil
Von Poop I haven't read trough the lst you posted in any rel detai, butI do have one correction and one addition. CCRA is in fact Corps CommanderRoyal Artillery There was also a CCMA anda CCHA. Corps Commander Medium Artillery and Corps Commander Heay Artillery. You show ack as meaing acknowledge which is obiously correct, however, within the RA it is also used for Assstant, hence OP-Ack is an Observagtion Post Assistant. Hpe his i of some interest. Phil
Adam Entries seen on the June '44 war diary against the name of an individual in my Dad's unit. To X(II) List - (Admission to Hospital) From X(II) List - (Discharge from Hospital) Robert Great thread - invaluable to anyone receiving service records for the first time. A couple of abreviations I think have not been included so far: CTC - Combined Training Centre and AAI - Allied Armies Italy. Can anyone translate any of the following: X(i), X(iv)a, Re X(i), PTO.X/1847/1/44, CMF XI.?? - thanks in hope. Tom.
Sorted - the list's well overdue a bigger update, need to transcribe all Ken's stuff so it's googlable, and I've missed a few of the other additions. Been meaning to look into edit permissions here, it'd be nice to have things like this as openly editable so people can just add/correct as they see fit, just not sure yet If it can be done... I suppose it'd also then be pretty vulnerable to a passing spammer too, hmmmm.
Gents I have serious reservations about BRAC Brigadier Royal Artillery (Canada). I have never come across this before, and having checked the official History of the Canadian Artillery, I havent found it there either. I would be more certain of its usage as Brigadier Royal Armoured Corps. I could of course be wrong, it isn't unknown. However, I thought I would put that one into the melting pot. Cheers Phil
Phil Have you come accross the Rank of W/Bdr?? See my seperate post - Northumberland Hussars - Ellis Race 1134883 cheers Paul
Found it (in WW1 records): The National Archives | DocumentsOnline | Help | Abbreviations of ranks W. BDR. = Acting Bombardier
