It's building.
Can you hear the IOC bandwagon coming? can you see the overpriced tat in your local supermarket? Can you feel the roar of Typhoons overhead?

As it's inevitably going to crop up, I'll declare this thread an Olympics Free-Fire zone. Politics allowed on this thread as a special offer, as politics and sport always seems intricately linked during this four-yearly bunfest (and 'cos I'm guessing it'll make me laugh.)

Happy about it?
Don't know that I am, but I suppose it's only a few weeks.

We are still paying for the soccer world cup. No one knows what to do with the stadiums and costs a fortune to maintain them.

The so called "global events" only benefit a small minority. Tax payers will have to pay a heavy price.

All counterfeit of course. Not only did we spend £400,000 on a logo, we did this to protect it, since copyright laws are not enough:

QFT

Disable people that have had there benefit cut and Remploy (which i believe was made to help disable solders from ww2) jobs axed Are going to disrupt the Olympics. A few will benefit indeed. We could have done the would cup so cheap as all the stuff was there but the Olympics who cares we can't even enter people in the pistol shooting.

Why aren't we using closed-down RAF bases, like we did in 1948? Save a fortune.

I thought I'd seen some bizarre pandering to the IOC, but that is truly peculiar.

Especially perhaps, for a Logo that looks like Lisa Simpson performing 'a certain act'.

Wouldn't that be fun...

Charles Bockscar reporting here live at WW2 Air Force Base Olympic 1 for the beginning of competitions.
For those of you unfamiliar with the history, this is where British Spitfires departed and returned during WW2. Today, this airfield hosts the shooting event, with competitors Britain facing off against Germany. We're just waiting to start while the judges get the German competitor to the correct end of the field, again.

The tarmac 1000M to my left is where B59's left and returned from their missions during WW2. What glorious history this beautiful location has.

This second tarmac has been converted to a huge sand pit to host the shot-put event. For those who don't know, in shot-put the object is to get the shot-put the farthest and have it land without rolling. To accomplish this you need to get it up very high so when it lands it creates a large crater. Let's see who's best at getting the necessary altitude for making those big craters, each competitor gets 2 shots. (psst..can someone tell the fat man over there to get his little boy out of the sand before he gets hurt?)
Our starting competitors for this event are the USA against Japan. Enola, over to you for live coverage..

The Red Arrows will fly over Belfast, Cardiff, Edinburgh and London to celebrate the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games.
The team, based at RAF Scampton in Lincolnshire, will return to flying with nine aircraft for the flypasts.

We had the 1988 winter games, still making money off them. Hope it works that way for you guys as well. We have speed skating, ski jumping, bobsleigh, luge and one or two other venues used by athletes for olympic training.
Plus if you want you can pay and go for a real bobsleigh ride (even at 30C), do it before the pub though :)

Olympic mascots kill me, why do they always have such dorky looking mascots? Wouldn't buy one for a kid, they'd terrorize them for life and result in huge counselling bills. Imagine a 3 year old waking up at 4am with Wenlock staring at him. Never sleep with the light off again.

What the hell is a Wenlock and Mandeville anyway, do the names have some meaning or did an IOC presidents kid get to name them? How about winky and blinky? They're like, a head with one eye
